Varanasi: The Varanasi Police Commissionerate has arrested two accused involved in mobile theft and cyber fraud cases under a special campaign against crime and criminals. The arrests were made by the Adampur Police Station team with assistance from the surveillance and cyber cell units.

According to police officials, the accused were apprehended on April 8, 2026, from the Maheshpur Industrial Area under the jurisdiction of Maduadih. During the operation, police recovered nine mobile phones, most of which were reportedly stolen devices.

The case was registered after a complainant reported that his mobile phone was stolen while he was travelling from his residence in Konia towards Cantt railway area on March 11, 2026. After losing the phone, he obtained a replacement SIM card from a Jio centre in Lucknow. However, he later discovered that the stolen SIM had been fraudulently ported to another telecom operator. Using the SIM, the accused allegedly created a new UPI ID and transferred nearly ₹1.5 lakh from the victim’s bank accounts to multiple accounts before withdrawing the cash.

During interrogation, the accused confessed that they had stolen several smartphones from different locations. They revealed that they would break the phone’s lock or remove the SIM card to access linked bank accounts. In many cases, they reset UPI passwords or created new UPI IDs to transfer money. If the phone could not be unlocked, they used the SIM in another device and ported it to another network to keep it active for further fraudulent transactions.

The arrested accused have been identified as Ashish Pal (26) from Chaubepur in Varanasi and Vinod Yadav (40) from Aurai in Bhadohi district. Police have registered the case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Information Technology Act. Further investigation is underway to determine their involvement in other similar crimes.

Post-monsoon data from 2020 to 2025 shows a groundwater decline of 3.33 meters in Badagaon, 1.97 meters in Pindra, and 0.33 meters in Sevapuri. Pre-monsoon figures present an even sharper drop, with Badagaon recording an 8.94-meter decline, Kashi Vidyapeeth 7.36 meters, Sevapuri 4.92 meters, urban Varanasi 4.85 meters, and other blocks also showing significant reductions.

In response, the administration has initiated regulatory measures, including issuing notices to 109 schools and reviewing over 410 NOC (No Objection Certificate) applications for groundwater extraction. Officials said the government has also secured sufficient crude oil supply for the next 60 days from alternative sources to prevent shortages in the country.

Experts believe the tax reduction could help oil marketing companies manage price fluctuations in the global market and potentially prevent a sharp rise in retail fuel prices.

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that more than three crore fake accounts have been removed from the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) portal as part of the government’s efforts to curb illegal ticket touting.

Speaking in the Lok Sabha during Question Hour, the minister said the move aims to ensure that genuine passengers can book train tickets without interference from agents and touts who misuse fake accounts.

Vaishnaw also highlighted that the government’s focus remains on providing comfortable and affordable rail services for passengers across the country. Addressing concerns about overcrowding in long-distance trains, the minister explained that the railway system prioritizes affordable travel options. According to him, around 70% of train coaches are general and sleeper coaches, while 78% of seats are in non-AC categories, ensuring that the majority of passengers can travel at lower costs.

A tragic incident took place at Panchganga Ghat in Varanasi where a young man drowned in the Ganges River while taking a bath.

According to reports, the young man had come to Varanasi with his friend to visit the city. After bathing in the river, they were planning to go for darshan at the Kashi Vishwanath Temple. However, while bathing, he went into deep water and slipped, after which he drowned.

The deceased has been identified as Shyam Kumar, a resident of Dehri-on-Sone in Rohtas district of Bihar.

Boatmen present at the ghat said that the two friends were bathing while one of them was taking photos. They had warned them not to go into deep water, but they did not listen. When the young man started drowning, some people tried to save him but could not rescue him.

The police were informed immediately, and within about half an hour a team from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) reached the spot. The team searched the river for around 30 minutes and then brought the young man out of the water.

He was taken for a medical check, where doctors declared him dead. His body has been kept in the mortuary.

Police have informed the victim’s father. It is reported that Shyam Kumar was a graduation student, and his father works in a private company. Further action is being taken by the police.
