Varanasi: In Ganjari area of Varanasi, women farmers have voiced strong opposition to the proposed Sports City and Town City project linked to the upcoming International Cricket Stadium. Their concerns have become visible on the ground through notices placed inside agricultural fields, where they have clearly stated their unwillingness to give up land.

One of the boards put up by the farmers carries the message “Jaan de denge, zameen nahi denge” (We will give our lives, but not our land). The notice reflects the intensity of feeling among women farmers who say the land proposed for the project is central to their livelihood and family security.

According to official plans, the Sports City and Town City are part of a broader development vision aimed at improving sports infrastructure and urban facilities around the stadium. While authorities project long-term development and economic growth, farmers argue that agricultural land remains their primary source of income and independence.

Women farmers, in particular, say the loss of land would directly affect household stability, food security, and future generations. Many of them have expressed concern over the lack of clarity regarding consultation, compensation mechanisms, and rehabilitation options.

Notably, the resistance has so far taken a symbolic form. There have been no large protests or demonstrations at the site. Instead, farmers have chosen to communicate their stand through boards placed in their own fields, making their position visible to anyone passing through the area.

The situation in Ganjari currently reflects a contrast between development planning and ground-level sentiment. This report documents the present scenario. Further coverage will focus on detailed interactions with women farmers to understand their expectations regarding dialogue, compensation, and participation in decision-making related to the proposed project.
