Severe Cold Wave Grips Varanasi, 12-Year Temperature Record Broken

Varanasi is reeling under an intense cold wave as icy westerly winds continue to sweep across the region, pushing temperatures to their lowest levels in over a decade. On Sunday, the city recorded a maximum temperature of just 13.5°C and a minimum of 8.8°C, marking one of the coldest days witnessed in the last 12 years.
According to meteorological data, this sharp dip in temperature places Varanasi among the coldest districts in Uttar Pradesh, alongside Ghazipur. The last comparable cold spell was recorded in December 2012, when the maximum temperature dropped to 13.3°C, and earlier in 2003, when it stood at 13.6°C. In recent years, such conditions have been rare, with 2019 recording a low of 13°C on December 28.
Westerly Winds Intensify the Chill
Meteorologist Atul Kumar Singh attributed the sudden plunge in temperature to strong westerly winds blowing at speeds of up to 7 km/h, combined with the impact of La Niña conditions and fresh snowfall in the Himalayan region. These cold air currents have descended into the plains, significantly intensifying the chill factor across eastern Uttar Pradesh.
Humidity levels surged to 93 percent, further worsening the cold conditions and contributing to dense fog across the region. Visibility in the early morning hours dropped to nearly 800 meters, affecting both road and rail movement.
Cold Day Conditions Declared
Weather experts confirmed the declaration of a “Cold Day”, a meteorological classification used when the maximum temperature falls to 13°C or below, while the minimum remains at or under 8°C. Such conditions pose health risks, particularly for the elderly, children, and those exposed to outdoor environments for long durations.
Authorities have advised residents to avoid early morning outings, keep themselves adequately warm, and follow health advisories issued by local administrations.
As the cold wave persists, the Meteorological Department has indicated that similar conditions may continue over the next few days, urging citizens to remain cautious.
