West Zone Police Detain 105 for Public Drinking

GURUGRAM: West Zone police detained 105 people during a one-day drive against drinking in public places on 29 September, after teams swept parks, parking lots, roadside stretches and other open spots across the zone, police said.
The operation was directed by Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) YVR Shashi Shekhar. Gurugram Police spokesperson Sandeep Turan said preventive action was taken under Section 172(2) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, which lets police detain a person found committing a public nuisance or related breach and produce them as required.
Detainees were held for roughly four to five hours at police stations covering the West Zone, counselled and released with warnings rather than locked into long custody, according to the police note. Officers said the aim was to break the habit of open drinking near residential parks and busy sector roads, not to fill lock-ups overnight.
Where teams checked and what comes next
Teams drawn from about 13 police stations and posts in the West Zone checked known hangouts after dusk, when empty liquor bottles and groups on park benches often draw resident complaints. Police listed parks, vehicle parking pockets, service lanes and open roadside stretches as the main hit points. No separate list of stations was released with the detainee tally.
Public drinking complaints have been a steady West Zone load through the monsoon and festive run-up, especially where liquor vends sit close to residential sectors. Officers said repeated warnings without visible checking had little effect, so the one-day sweep was meant to signal that open drinking will draw immediate detention under BNSS Section 172(2).
Haryana Police publishes force-level circulars and station contacts through https://www.haryanapolice.gov.in/. Residents can also route civic complaints through the district portal at https://gurugram.gov.in/ when the issue overlaps with park maintenance or municipal lighting, though the detention power itself sits with police.
Police did not claim seizures of large commercial stocks in this drive. The 105 figure covers people found drinking or creating related nuisance in public, not a raid on licensed shops. Anyone who disputes a detention can approach the station with ID and, if needed, the area ACP once the preventive note is closed.
For RWAs that have petitioned for night patrols near parks, the West Zone note is a concrete tally rather than a vague promise. Whether the number falls on the next weekend will show if the warning stuck. DCP Shashi Shekhar's office has not announced a fixed weekly calendar for repeat sweeps, only that zero-tolerance messaging will continue where complaints persist.
Open drinking remains a municipal nuisance issue as much as a police one when broken glass and late noise spill into children's play areas. Tuesday's 105 detentions put a dated West Zone number on that enforcement, with named officers and a clear BNSS section for readers to track.
Park committees that want follow-up can log the date, time and approximate headcount when they next see open drinking, then hand that note to the beat officer rather than only posting in society WhatsApp groups. Named complaints travel farther than anonymous venting when the West Zone desk reviews whether another sweep is due.
Liquor vend operators were not the target of Tuesday's tally, but police said anyone encouraging consumption immediately outside shop gates in a way that spills into the carriageway can still face separate public-nuisance action. The 105 figure stands alone as a public-drinking detention count for one West Zone day.
