Households in England and Wales have begun receiving letters about this winter's £150 Warm Home Discount, with some recipients required to provide more information before the rebate can be applied. The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero announced the mailing on October 22, rather than a new cash payment available to every household.

The department's announcement says letters will continue to arrive through January 2027. A letter can either confirm that the discount will be given automatically or ask the recipient to phone the scheme's helpline. Where information is needed, the deadline is February 26, 2027.

The payment method matters. The Warm Home Discount is a one-off reduction on an eligible customer's electricity bill, not money sent to their bank account. Suppliers apply the credit. Someone whose supplier provides both gas and electricity may be able to have the discount applied to the gas bill instead, but must check with that supplier.

The department expects around six million households across Britain to benefit this winter. That is a scheme-wide estimate, not the number of letters delivered on October 22 or a guarantee that every person receiving a letter will qualify without further checks.

Which households qualify in England and Wales

The government's current scheme guide ties eligibility to circumstances on August 23, 2026. On that date, the electricity supplier must have participated in the scheme, the customer or their partner must have received a qualifying means-tested benefit, and either person's name must have been on the electricity bill.

The qualifying benefits listed for England and Wales are Universal Credit, Housing Benefit, income-related Employment and Support Allowance and Pension Credit. Receiving a benefit alone does not remove the other conditions. The supplier and bill-name checks remain part of the published eligibility test.

A letter confirming eligibility will tell the recipient if no further action is required. For eligible customers, the electricity supplier must apply the discount by March 31, 2027. That is the payment deadline, not a promise that every account will show the credit as soon as its letter arrives.

Anyone who believes they qualify but has not received a letter by early January should contact the Warm Home Discount Scheme. The guide says contact must be made before February 26. It lists the helpline as 0800 030 9322, open Monday to Friday from 8am to 6pm.

Scotland has an additional application route

The scheme also operates in Scotland, but the route is not identical. The guide distinguishes a core group receiving the discount automatically from a broader group that must apply directly to its energy supplier. The same August 23 reference date, participating-supplier requirement and bill-name condition appear in the Scottish guidance.

Pension Credit is among the Scottish automatic-qualification routes. Other routes depend on specified disability, health, premium or young-child circumstances alongside particular benefits. Households should use the Scottish section of the official guide to check their own combination rather than assume the England and Wales list applies unchanged.

Scottish customers outside the automatic group should ask their supplier about eligibility and how to apply as early as possible. Suppliers may impose additional criteria, and the number of discounts available is limited. Previous eligibility does not guarantee a new award. Approved applicants must remain with that supplier until the discount is paid.

People in Scotland who apply directly to a supplier will not receive a letter from the government scheme and should contact the supplier about their application. The Warm Home Discount does not operate in Northern Ireland, where the government guide directs residents to the separate Affordable Warmth scheme.

Prepayment meters and suspicious messages

Using a prepayment or pay-as-you-go electricity meter does not rule out eligibility. Suppliers explain how qualifying customers receive their discount, which may be through a meter top-up voucher. Park-home residents use a different application route. The discount does not affect Cold Weather Payment or Winter Fuel Payment entitlement.

The department has warned recipients to use their normal way of contacting their energy supplier. It advises against following suspicious links or providing financial information requested by email, text or phone. The mailing is expected to continue for several months, so an unsolicited message should not be treated as proof of eligibility.
