NEW DELHI: vivo has brought its first mixed reality headset to India, but you cannot buy it yet. The vivo Vision Discovery Edition was shown at the company's vivo NEXT event on 6 October as a showcase device, and vivo has set up demo zones in 15 of its exclusive stores across 10 cities, according to its India newsroom release.
The cities are Bengaluru, Ahmedabad, Coimbatore, Indore, Dehradun, Delhi, Patna, Kolkata, Nagpur and Mumbai. vivo has not announced an India price, a sale date or a commercial launch plan. The release calls it a showcase of vivo's approach to spatial computing.
So this is a chance to try a headset that has no Indian price tag, inside a phone store, before vivo decides whether to sell it here.
What vivo says the headset does
The Vision Discovery Edition weighs 398 grams, vivo says. To help it fit different faces, it comes with four sizes of light seal and eight foam padding options. Control is by eye and hand tracking rather than handheld controllers.
The displays are dual micro-OLED panels with a combined 8K resolution, and the headset runs on Qualcomm's Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 platform. vivo's demo content includes films on a 120-foot virtual theatre screen, 360 degree immersive environments, spatial photos viewed in depth, and mixed reality games that place objects in the room around you. You can also open several windows side by side.
vivo describes the mixed reality view as keeping your real surroundings with you while your content plays in front of you, so you are not fully shut off from the room.
Who gets to try it, and until when
The release ties the demo to the new X Fold6 foldable. X Fold6 buyers get priority walk-in access at the experience zones by showing a pre-order or purchase invoice, or the phone itself. vivo says this privilege runs for the first three months after the X Fold6 launch, until 5 January 2027.
The release does not say whether other visitors can book a session, or how long a demo lasts. If you are planning a trip to a vivo store for this, call ahead and ask whether the zone is open to walk-ins without a Fold6.
Why a phone maker is showing a headset
vivo pitched the headset as part of a wider ecosystem push at vivo NEXT, alongside the V80, the X Fold6, the S2 FE and its OriginOS 7 software. Its software features such as cross-device file sharing and Office Kit already link phones and PCs, and a headset is the next screen in that chain.
India has seen this category mostly through smart glasses so far. Meta's Ray-Ban line is on sale here, and we covered the Ray-Ban Meta Gen 3 India price of Rs 44,300 earlier this month. Full headsets remain rarer. Meta itself has talked up lighter future hardware, as we noted in our report on the 100g VR glasses Meta is planning for spring 2027.
At 398 grams, the vivo headset sits closer to a traditional headset than to glasses. Comfort over a long movie will be the real test, which is why the store demos matter more than the spec sheet.
The name also tells you something. vivo calls this a Discovery Edition, and the release frames the India visit as a showcase of the technology. That reads like an early version meant to gather reactions, not a finished retail product with a local launch plan.
What to watch
Three things are missing from vivo's India material: a price, which phones and PCs it will pair with locally, and whether Indian streaming apps will be available on it. Until vivo answers those, treat the Vision Discovery Edition as a preview of where the company wants to go, not a product to budget for this Diwali.
We will update this report if vivo announces an India launch date or price.
