If you bought a vivo V70 this year, the V80 launch on 6 October probably made you wonder whether your phone is already old. It is not. We lined up vivo's own spec pages for the V70 and the V80, plus the V80 launch release and the OriginOS 7 rollout chart. For most V70 owners, the honest answer is to wait.
Here is what actually changed, what did not, and who might still want to move up.
What the V80 costs
The V80 is priced at Rs 62,999 for 8GB plus 128GB, Rs 69,999 for 8GB plus 256GB and Rs 79,999 for 8GB plus 512GB, price as of 7 October 2026, 1:25 AM IST. It goes on sale on 13 October.
vivo is offering an exchange bonus of up to 10 percent through its V-Upgrade programme. That bonus is an alternative to the bank cashback, not an extra. Your V70's exchange value will depend on its condition and the day's quote, so get a quote before deciding.
What stays the same
The chip. Both phones use the Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Gen 4, a 4nm processor, according to vivo's pages. (The V70 Elite uses a different chip, so check which model you own.) Day-to-day speed should feel very similar, because the core hardware has not moved.
The cameras, mostly. vivo's V80 page lists a 50MP ZEISS main camera with OIS on a 1.6cm sensor, a 50MP ZEISS telephoto with 3x optical zoom on a 1.3cm sensor, and a ZEISS ultra-wide. The V70 page lists the same sensor sizes for its 50MP main and 50MP telephoto, the same 3x optical zoom, and a ZEISS ultra-wide. Both have a 50MP ZEISS group selfie camera with a 92 degree field of view, and both shoot 4K at 60 frames per second.
The toughness and support. Both carry IP68 and IP69 dust and water ratings. The V70 page lists up to four OS generations and six years of security updates, and vivo promises six years of security updates for the V80 too. vivo's V80 footnote says those six years count from the launch date and cover security patches only, not OS upgrades, so read the fine print on both phones if long support is why you buy vivo. Both phones use a 6.59-inch class screen.
What the V80 adds
A bigger battery. The V80 has 7,200 mAh, with a rated capacity of 7,015 mAh according to the footnote on its product page. The V70 has 6,500 mAh. That is about 11 percent more on paper. Both charge at 90W.
A faster screen. The V80 runs at up to 144Hz, against 120Hz on the V70. Both are 1.5K OLED panels. You will notice 144Hz mainly in scrolling and in games that support it. Not every app runs at the panel's top refresh rate.
New video and AI camera tools. The V80 adds 4K Cinematic Video with three colour looks applied while recording, an AI Creative Camera with more than 30 styles, AI Retouch for removing and moving objects, and AI Diwali Portrait 2.0. These are software features. Some could reach older phones in updates, but vivo has not said so, so do not count on it.
OriginOS 7 on day one. The V80 ships with it. The V70 has to wait, which brings us to the main reason not to rush.
The V70 gets OriginOS 7 in December
vivo's published rollout chart puts the V70, V70 Elite and V70 FE in the mid December 2026 batch for OriginOS 7, based on Android 17. That means features such as the Jovi 6 assistant, Snap Note for turning photos of notes into documents, AI Search across files, AI Recorder summaries, Shake and Share file transfer and the new Security Shield should reach your phone in about two months.
vivo's release adds that feature availability can vary by model, so the V70 may not get every single tool. But the bulk of the software experience that the V80 launches with is coming to you anyway, without spending Rs 62,999.
When the update arrives, back up first and install it on Wi-Fi with plenty of charge. Our phone backup and reset checklist walks through the backup steps.
So who should upgrade?
Wait, if you are a typical V70 owner. Same chip, very similar cameras, same water resistance, same update promise, and OriginOS 7 due in December. The gains are a 700 mAh battery bump, 144Hz and some new camera modes.
Consider it if your V70 is damaged or the battery is struggling. If you were going to replace the phone anyway, the V80's bigger battery and fresh warranty are worth having, and the exchange bonus softens the cost.
Consider it if you make a lot of video for social media. The cinematic colour looks and AI styles are aimed squarely at people who post reels daily, and they are V80 features today.
Skip it if you are on an older V-series phone and want value. V60 and V60e owners also get OriginOS 7 in mid December, and V50 owners at the end of December, per vivo's chart. If you do want new hardware on a budget, other brands' festive prices are worth a look. Our Diwali phone upgrade guide by budget sorts options by price, and our OPPO F35 Pro and F35 price report covers a cheaper big-battery rival on sale from 11 October.
The V80 is a solid update. It is just not a big enough jump to make a recent V70 feel out of date, especially with the new software on its way.
