Police Arrest Shreya Upadhyay Murder Accused Vivek Choubey After Rajatalab Encounter

Rajatalab police arrested Vivek Choubey alias Nikhil, the main accused in the Shreya Upadhyay murder case, on Monday morning, 7 September 2026, after an encounter near Jagatdevpur under the station’s area. Police said he allegedly opened fire on the team, was shot in the right leg, and was taken for treatment to Jakhini Community Health Centre. A country-made .315 pistol, one empty cartridge and one live cartridge were recovered, they said. An Arms Act case was registered alongside the existing murder file.

The arrest is the material update to the earlier “at large” track on this case. Co-accused Puneet Mishra was held on 24 August and Ramsahay Choubey on 27 August. Monday’s custody of Vivek closes the principal absconder gap that those two pickups had left open. The murder file remains crime number 157/2026 under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections 103(1), 3(5) and 238(A) on the Rajatalab book, with the fresh Arms Act registration for the recovered weapon.

Police said the team acted on specific inputs after directions from the commissionerate side, including DCP Neetu Kadyan and Additional DCP Nripendra. The briefing placed the confrontation on a rural stretch near Jagatdevpur. Officers said Vivek fired first, that the reply fire hit his right leg, and that he was shifted to Jakhini CHC for medical care. Those are police claims from the Monday encounter narrative. Shreya Upadhyay, 22, of Marui under Rajatalab, had been missing from 18 August. Her body was recovered on 20 August at Bachchhav Paschimpura under Rohaniya. On motive, police have put out a line that Vivek’s side had wanted a marriage with Shreya, that her family had arranged another match, and that the dispute fed the crime. That motive claim remains under investigation. It is not treated here as a settled judicial finding. Repeating it as proven would overstate what the station has established in open court.

Cholapur is the native area linked to the accused family in earlier briefings. Rajatalab holds the FIR. Rohaniya held the body recovery. Three station maps still sit on one file. The difference on Monday is that Vivek is no longer the absconder named in the prior “13 days at large” update.

Medical attention at Jakhini CHC and the Arms Act seizure are the procedural markers police attached to the arrest. Until a chargesheet and court process test every allegation, the public record stops at custody, injury treatment, weapon recovery and the continuing investigation into motive.
