Varanasi Suspends Ganga Boat Services After River Breaches Safety Level

VARANASI: Passenger boat operations on the Ganga have been suspended after the river crossed the official warning level, temporarily removing one of the city's most familiar forms of movement from the water.

The district administration stepped up surveillance after the Rajghat gauge reached 70.29 metres, above the warning mark of 70.26 metres. The danger level is 71.26 metres and Varanasi's highest recorded flood level is 73.90 metres. Officials advised residents, pilgrims and visitors to stay away from submerged steps and avoid entering areas where the current is strong.

For tourists, the order means sunrise and evening rides should be treated as unavailable until the administration formally restores services. A boatman offering an informal trip during a suspension is not a substitute for clearance. The river can look calm from an upper terrace while carrying debris, creating cross-currents around buildings and covering railings, chains and steps that are normally visible.

The closure also affects livelihoods. Hundreds of boat-owning and boat-operating families depend on daily trips, pilgrim movement and small river crossings. When services stop, their income pauses immediately even as the cost of securing boats rises. Lines have to be checked repeatedly, engines and batteries protected, and boats moved away from structures that may damage them as the level changes.

The restriction is separate from emergency and authorised relief work. NDRF, water police and administrative teams may continue to use boats for inspection, evacuation or essential transport under controlled conditions. Members of the public should not assume that the sight of a rescue boat means commercial operations have restarted.

High water also changes the geometry of the ghats. The broad steps on which passengers ordinarily queue may be under several feet of water, leaving narrow upper approaches crowded with pedestrians, funeral parties, shop workers and residents. Adding tourist embarkation to that space would create avoidable risk.

People with advance bookings should contact operators about rescheduling and avoid paying anyone who claims to have special permission without verifiable proof. Visitors can still view the river from open, barricaded upper areas where officials permit access, but should keep behind safety lines.

Boat services are usually reviewed against river readings, the strength of the current and conditions at boarding points. There is no reliable reopening time until an official order is issued. In a city where the river is part of the daily route as well as the landscape, the suspension is disruptive. It is also a straightforward safety decision: when the steps disappear and the current strengthens, the margin for improvisation disappears with them.
