Schools in Varanasi will remain closed tomorrow, Monday, 26 October 2026, on the occasion of Maharishi Valmiki Jayanti. The Uttar Pradesh government has declared a public holiday for the day.
What the government order says
The order was issued on 25 October 2026 by the General Administration Department (Samanya Prashasan Anubhag) of the Uttar Pradesh government in Lucknow. It declares Monday, 26 October 2026, a public holiday across Uttar Pradesh for Maharishi Valmiki Jayanti.
Maharishi Valmiki Jayanti had earlier been listed as a restricted holiday for 26 October 2026, at serial number 24 in the list of restricted holidays attached to the government's notification of 17 November 2025, which announced the year's public holidays. After due consideration at the government level, the state has now decided to declare it a public holiday instead.
The notice also says the holiday does not fall under the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881. All other parts of the 17 November 2025 notification remain as they were.
A copy of the order has been sent to all departments, divisional commissioners and district magistrates in the state, among other offices, for necessary action.
What this means for families in Varanasi
Students in Varanasi do not need to go to school on Monday, 26 October 2026. Regular classes are expected to resume on the next working day. Parents who need specifics about transport, pending homework or any test dates should check with their own school.
Please share this update with other parents and students so that everyone knows before the morning.
