Varanasi has another moment of pride as Ms. Sushmita, an Assistant Loco Pilot with North Central Railway and the daughter-in-law of Varanasi, has been conferred with the prestigious Ati Vishisht Rail Seva Puraskar 2025 by the Ministry of Railways.

The award recognises her exceptional presence of mind, alertness and swift decision-making that helped avert a major accident while on duty. On 6 November 2024, while operating Train No. 20175 between Banaras (BSBS) and Hardattpur (HDT), Ms. Sushmita noticed an open level crossing (No. 7C) with vehicles moving across the track. Sensing the imminent danger, she immediately took emergency action, safely controlled the train, and informed the on-duty Station Master and concerned control officials.

Her timely intervention ensured passenger safety and prevented a potentially serious mishap. The incident was duly recorded in the railway safety management system, highlighting her adherence to protocol and commitment to duty.

Ms. Sushmita was formally honoured during a national-level ceremony, where senior railway officials praised her professionalism and dedication. Her achievement has brought pride not only to the North Central Railway zone but also to Varanasi, with locals hailing her as an inspiration for women in uniform and the railways.

The recognition stands as a testament to the critical role played by frontline railway staff in ensuring the safety of millions of passengers every day.
