VARANASI: Preliminary cable-alignment testing has begun on the Rathyatra–Godowlia section of the city’s ropeway project, with checks extending towards Tower 26 at Laksa, according to the project update issued on October 24.

Officials of National Highways Logistics Management Limited said the testing would be extended towards Godowlia. They indicated November 15 as the planned start for alignment trials up to that end of the section, while describing the wider exercise as a process expected to run for about a month.

That date concerns a testing stage, not an announced opening for public rides. A cabin moving on a trial line does not mean passengers can board, tickets are on sale or every part of the route has received clearance for commercial service.

Alignment before load testing

The October 24 account places cable-alignment checks before the next stage of load testing. Sandbags are to be used during the load trials, with staff acting as dummy passengers in a later test programme on the first section.

The purpose of these stages is different from demonstrating a passenger journey. Alignment concerns the running line and its supports, while a load trial examines operation with a test load. Completing one stage is not the same as completing every check required for public service.

Officials said no complaint had been reported in the second-phase testing described in the update. That statement records the position during the current trials; it is not a substitute for the subsequent testing and approvals needed before opening.

First section has a separate test sequence

On the Cantt–Rathyatra stretch, the reported checks of the first phase have been completed. Staff-based load trials are planned for the following month, keeping the sequence on that section distinct from alignment work continuing towards Godowlia.

The distinction is useful when residents see different parts of the system at different stages. Progress on the Cantt side and work towards Laksa can be happening within the same project without establishing that the entire route is ready for passengers.

NHAI’s project-launch material describes the Varanasi urban ropeway as a connection between the railway-station area and Godowlia, intended to offer an alternative to the congested road journey. The project’s foundation was laid in March 2023.

The latest development is more specific than that wider objective: alignment work has reached the Laksa portion of the second section, with an extension towards Godowlia and further load trials still in the programme.

A public opening date, fare and boarding arrangements require their own confirmed announcement. Until then, the October 24 update should be read as a report on construction and testing progress, rather than an invitation to use the ropeway as an operating transport service.
