Varanasi Power Demand Climbs to 700 MW as Local Faults Stretch Outages

VARANASI: Electricity demand across Varanasi has risen to an estimated 650–700 megawatts over the past two days, while a series of local cable, feeder and pole faults has lengthened outages in several parts of the city.
Supply interruptions were reported most frequently in the Kal Bhairav, Naria, Lanka and Ramnagar areas. At Town Hall parking on Monday, a transformer cable burned and interrupted the Ramghat feeder for about 30 minutes. On Tuesday, a technical fault affected the Sudiya feeder, while a high-tension cable box near the Nichibagh post office burned and kept the area without power for hours.
Consumers connected to Naria substation in Sunderpur, Tadia and Vishwakarma Basti experienced a morning-to-afternoon cut linked to cable-laying work. In Ramnagar, a fallen pole near Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital shut the Janakpur feeder. Lanka and Sigra also saw outages lasting several hours, according to the local report.
Demand figures alone do not explain every cut. A network can have adequate generation available and still lose supply when overloaded local equipment, damaged joints or construction work interrupts distribution. Heat and humidity raise household cooling loads, while rain and waterlogging expose weak cable boxes and pole foundations. When these pressures arrive together, repair crews face multiple faults rather than one planned shutdown.
The electricity department should distinguish scheduled work from breakdowns in its public messages. A useful outage notice names the feeder, affected localities, start time, reason and best restoration estimate. Residents can plan around three hours; they cannot plan around a vague assurance that supply will return soon.
Hospitals, small clinics, apartment water pumps and businesses with refrigerated stock are especially vulnerable. Backup generators must be operated in ventilated spaces, never inside a room or enclosed basement. Inverters should not be overloaded, and households should unplug sensitive devices when voltage fluctuates repeatedly.
The fallen pole near a hospital deserves a structural check of neighbouring poles, not only replacement of the one that failed. Burned cable boxes should be examined for load, moisture and workmanship. Restoring electricity without identifying the recurring cause can send the same crew back after the next shower.
Consumers can report sparks, damaged boxes and low wires, but should not gather around repair sites or touch cables that appear inactive. Supply may be restored remotely without warning.
Varanasi's current problem is the overlap of high demand and fragile points in the last mile. Reducing outage time will require faster fault information today and stronger preventive maintenance before the next seasonal peak.
