Varanasi Police Arrest Absconding Manager From Gurugram For ₹70 Lakh Embezzlement; Carried ₹25k Reward
VARANASI: The Varanasi Cantonment (Cantt) Police have achieved a major breakthrough by arresting Saurabh Gupta, a wanted criminal carrying a reward of ₹25,000, for embezzling ₹70 lakhs from a local saree firm.
The Arrest: Location: Acting on precise surveillance inputs, the police tracked down Gupta in Gurugram, Haryana, where he was living in Patel Nagar (Civil Lines). He was arrested on January 18 and brought to Varanasi.
Action: After interrogation, he was produced before the court and sent to jail.Background: Originally a resident of Ganga Nagar Colony, Adampur (Varanasi), Gupta had been evading arrest for years.
The Case (2021): The Scam: The case dates back to September 8, 2021. Devanand Sewaramani Sappu, owner of the Ardali Bazar-based 'Suvidha Saree' firm, had filed a complaint against Gupta (who was his manager/accountant) and others.
Modus Operandi: Gupta allegedly created fake firms and siphoned off funds worth approximately ₹70 lakhsunder the guise of payments for goods.
