The Varanasi Municipal Corporation carried out a major recovery drive in the Saptasagar medicine market of Varanasi against property owners who had not paid their house tax for years.

During the action, the municipal team targeted around 175 houses and commercial establishments in the market that had outstanding property tax dues. According to officials, the total pending tax from these establishments is estimated to be over ₹5 crore.

Despite protests from some shopkeepers, the municipal officials proceeded with the enforcement drive and sealed several establishments that had failed to clear their dues. As a result of the action, property owners deposited ₹10.30 lakh on the spot.

Zonal officer Mrityunjay Narayan Mishra said the drive was conducted as part of the intensified property tax recovery campaign for the financial year 2025–26. The operation was carried out on the instructions of Municipal Commissioner Himanshu Nagpal.

Officials stated that notices had already been issued multiple times to the defaulters before the action was taken. They were also provided with their property tax bills and were requested to clear their dues. However, many owners failed to respond.

During the drive, shopkeepers and building owners requested the authorities to give them time to pay the remaining dues.
