Varanasi Municipal Corporation Hosts UK Mayor; Urban Expansion and AI Investment Discussed

During his visit to Varanasi, Raj Mishra, the Mayor of Wellingborough in England, paid a courtesy call to Ashok Kumar Tiwari at the mayor’s office. The meeting was held at the Varanasi Municipal Corporation, where the visiting mayor was welcomed with a traditional angavastram and a bouquet.
The interaction was attended by Municipal Commissioner Himanshu Nagpal along with several councillors of the city. During the meeting, both leaders discussed topics related to urban development, expansion of public facilities, and various welfare initiatives for citizens.
Raj Mishra currently serves as the Mayor of Wellingborough Town Council in the United Kingdom. Originally from Mirzapur district in Uttar Pradesh, he was elected as the fifth mayor of the council on May 13, 2025, and his term will continue until May 13, 2026. He is associated with the Conservative Party.
Coming from a farmer’s family, Mishra completed his B.Tech from Chandigarh and later earned an M.Tech in Computer Science from London. He also received certification in Data Science from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Before entering politics, he worked for about 15 years in the information technology sector, including roles with the UK Ministry of Defence and the banking industry.
During his tenure as mayor, he has pledged support to local charity initiatives such as the Veterans Community Network and the Louisa Gregory’s Hospice Campaign. He had also announced a potential investment of around ₹2,500 crore in Uttar Pradesh under an AI development solutions project in October 2025.
Councillors present at the meeting expressed hope that cooperation and dialogue between the two cities would grow stronger in the future. The event was coordinated by Public Relations Officer Sandeep Srivastava.
