Varanasi Jal Police Issues Strict Advisory on Ganga Boat Safety, BNS 2023 Section 282 Action Warned

Varanasi: To ensure passenger safety on the River Ganga, the Jal Police in Varanasi has issued a strict advisory warning boat operators against negligence. Authorities have made it clear that any boatman found endangering lives through careless operation will face legal action, including possible jail time or a monetary penalty.

According to officials, cases will be registered under Section 282 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023, which deals with negligent operation of vessels. If a person operates a boat or steamer in a manner that puts human life or property at risk, they can face up to six months in jail or a fine of up to ₹10,000.

Station In-Charge Rajkishore Pandey stated that both boat drivers and boat owners will be held accountable for violations. The move comes amid growing concerns over overcrowding, rash driving, and unsafe practices during boat rides, especially between popular ghats.

Key Guidelines Issued by Jal Police:

Boats must not carry passengers beyond their permitted capacity.

No passenger will be allowed onboard without wearing a life jacket.

Boats must not be operated at high speed.

Boats traveling from Assi Ghat to Namo Ghat must move along the sandbank side.

Boats traveling from Namo Ghat to Assi Ghat must stay closer to the ghat side.

Boats emitting excessive smoke due to engine faults will not be permitted to operate.

Standing or taking selfies on a moving boat must not be allowed.

Boat operators must not consume alcohol or any intoxicating substances while operating the vessel.
