Varanasi: FIR Against 8 for Spreading Fake AI Videos to Derail Manikarnika Ghat Project, Says CP Mohit Agrawal | Exclusive

Varanasi, January 19, 2026: In an exclusive interaction with Dalimss News, City Police Commissioner Mohit Agrawal revealed that an FIR has been registered against eight individuals for allegedly attempting to derail the ongoing Manikarnika Ghat redevelopment project by circulating fake AI-generated videos and images showing demolition of temples, including the Kumbh Mahadev Temple.
The Commissioner stated that the police are actively investigating the matter. Those named in the FIR have been given 72 hours to present their side of the story. If found guilty, they could face up to five years in prison under relevant sections of the law.
CP Agrawal further claimed that the AI-manipulated images and videos appear to have been created to incite unrest and create an imbalance in public perception. “We are taking this matter very seriously,” he said. “The use of AI technology to spread misinformation about sacred sites is unacceptable, and strict action will be taken against anyone trying to destabilize public order.”
The Manikarnika Ghat redevelopment project, a key initiative in Varanasi, has been under scrutiny and discussion for its scope and significance in preserving heritage while improving infrastructure. The police's quick response underscores the sensitivity of using digital platforms to spread false information, especially concerning religious landmarks.
Authorities have assured that investigations will be thorough and impartial, and the public is urged not to fall prey to unverified content circulating online.
