Varanasi Civic Body Waives Water Tax Surcharge For Residential Buildings; Residents Can Pay Arrears By March 31

VARANASI: Bringing relief to thousands of households, the Varanasi Municipal Corporation (VMC) has announced a 100% waiver on the surcharge (late payment penalty) for Water Tax (Jal Kal).The Decision: The decision was taken during the House meeting on Monday presided over by Mayor Ashok Kumar Tiwari.
Beneficiaries: The waiver applies to residential and mixed-use buildings.Deadline: Residents have until March 31 to pay their outstanding water tax dues without paying a single rupee as a surcharge.
Exclusion: The administration clarified that fully commercial buildings will not benefit from this waiver.
Background: The move came after Councilor Suresh Kumar Chaurasia raised the issue in the house, pointing out that the Water Department had sent bills with heavy surcharges pending for years without prior notice. Acknowledging the grievance, the Mayor ordered officials to issue revised bills to all eligible consumers by the end of this month.
