Varanasi Civic Body Cracks Down On Overcharging: Rate Boards Mandatory For Eateries; Bridge Renamed

VARANASI: In a significant move to improve the experience for pilgrims and tourists, the Varanasi Municipal Corporation (VMC) has introduced strict measures to curb overcharging by local vendors.
Mandatory Rate Boards: Addressing frequent complaints about tourists being fleeced with arbitrary pricing, the Corporation has made it mandatory for all food and beverage outlets to display rate boards (price lists).
The Zone: This rule is strictly applicable to the high-traffic zone extending from Maidagin to Assi Ghat.The Goal: The move aims to bring transparency and stop shopkeepers from charging exorbitant amounts from visitors who are unaware of local prices.
Bridge Renamed: During the general house meeting, another major decision was the official renaming of a prominent city bridge. The Kazzakpura Setu will now be known as the 'Baba Lat Bhairav Setu'. The proposal received the final seal of approval from the house.
Summer Preparations: With the summer season approaching, Mayor Ashok Kumar Tiwari issued strict directives regarding water infrastructure:
Cleaning & Repair: Orders have been issued to clean wells and re-bore handpumps on a war footing.
Workforce: To ensure prompt maintenance, one mechanic and two laborers will now be deployed in every ward to handle local civic issues immediately.
