Three Structures Demolished as Varanasi Airport Expansion Work Advances

Varanasi: Authorities demolished three structures at Pura Raghunathpur on 17 July as land-clearance work moved forward for the expansion of Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport at Babatpur.

The operation was conducted by the district administration with police presence. Officials also reviewed pending clearance work and indicated that action would continue at other identified locations.

The development is a concrete step in a project that had previously been described mainly through plans for runway extension, additional airport capacity and a road tunnel. It also shifts immediate attention to land handover, compensation records and communication with affected residents.

Why the land is needed

The airport expansion is intended to support a longer runway and larger aircraft while increasing passenger-handling capacity. A proposed tunnel beneath the runway extension would preserve road connectivity where the enlarged airside area crosses the existing route.

Airports require a protected, obstacle-controlled perimeter around runways and operational areas. Structures on acquired land may therefore have to be removed before civil work can proceed. Each removal, however, must be tied to completed legal notice, possession and compensation procedures.

Pura Raghunathpur is among the settlements affected by the expansion footprint. Residents need plot-specific information rather than broad project announcements: which parcel has been acquired, when possession was taken, whether compensation has been paid and what remedy remains if ownership or valuation is disputed.

Construction and travel impact

The runway and tunnel package is important for eastern Uttar Pradesh because the airport serves Varanasi, neighbouring districts, pilgrims and business travellers. Better infrastructure can support more capable operations, but capacity gains also depend on airline schedules and passenger demand.

That distinction has been visible in recent months as Varanasi has faced reductions on some flight routes. On 18 July, monsoon conditions also caused a cancellation and delay, showing that reliable connectivity depends on both long-term construction and day-to-day operations.

As clearance expands, the administration should publish traffic diversions and a phase-by-phase schedule for Babatpur. Construction near an active airport requires strict separation between work zones and flight operations, while the tunnel will require coordinated road management.

The demolition of three structures does not mean the wider project is complete or that major civil construction has begun across the entire alignment. The next verifiable milestones will be completion of land possession, contractor mobilisation, protective works and formal traffic arrangements. Clear public updates will be essential as the expansion moves from acquisition into construction.
