A suspected suicide attempt has been reported from the Nakkhighat area under Sarnath police station limits in Varanasi. A 20-year-old youth is feared to have jumped into the Ganga River early Monday morning, triggering a search operation by rescue teams.

According to police, Suraj Rajbhar, a resident of Deendayalpur and son of Chandrabali Rajbhar, allegedly left his home around 5 am on a bicycle. His family initially assumed he had gone for a morning walk. However, when he did not return for a long time, they began searching for him.

At Nakkhighat bridge, family members found his bicycle and slippers lying unattended. Locals reported seeing a young man standing alone on the bridge in the early hours, though no one witnessed the actual jump. This has strengthened the suspicion that he may have leapt into the river.

Family members stated that Suraj had been under mental stress and was undergoing treatment at a hospital in Bhojubir. He was the eldest among two brothers and three sisters. Two of his sisters are married, while one is unmarried. The family’s financial condition is weak, and Suraj worked as a daily wage laborer alongside his father to support the household.

Upon receiving information, Sarnath police reached the spot and alerted the SDRF team. Rescue personnel began an intensive search operation in the Ganga and the nearby Varuna river confluence area. As of now, no trace of the has been found.
