UPI Lite has a limit of Rs 1,000 for each payment and a maximum balance of Rs 5,000 at any point in time under the RBI framework checked for this guide. Those are two different limits. A Rs 5,000 balance does not allow a single Rs 5,000 Lite payment, and the balance ceiling should not automatically be read as a universal daily spending allowance.

UPI Lite limit per transaction: what RBI changed

The RBI circular dated 4 December 2024 increased the Lite limits to Rs 1,000 per transaction and Rs 5,000 in total at any time, with immediate effect. It amended the framework for small value digital payments in offline mode. This is the established rule being explained, not a newly announced October 2026 change.

The circular's reference to an earlier Rs 500 transaction limit and Rs 2,000 instrument limit can cause confusion when an older passage is read on its own. Its operative paragraph specifically sets out the enhanced UPI Lite limits. That is why the date and the precise product name matter when comparing two apparently different answers.

SBI's official guide to UPI limits, also checked on 31 October 2026 at 21:46 IST, lists small value Lite payments of up to Rs 1,000 without a UPI PIN and a maximum Lite balance of Rs 5,000. The bank page therefore corroborates the two headline amounts in the RBI circular.

UPI Lite balance limit versus daily limit

A balance is the money available in Lite at a particular moment. A daily payment limit measures spending across a defined period. These are different measurements, even if an application happens to display both on the same screen. The RBI circular cited here establishes the transaction and balance ceilings; it does not establish a universal daily spending total for every application.

Consider a simple hypothetical example. A person starts with Rs 2,000 in Lite and makes a Rs 700 payment followed by a Rs 900 payment. Each payment is below Rs 1,000. The remaining balance is Rs 2,000 minus Rs 700 minus Rs 900, which equals Rs 400. The fact that the original balance exceeded Rs 1,000 was not a breach of the payment ceiling.

Now imagine a Rs 1,200 bill while Rs 3,000 remains available. There is enough balance to cover the bill, but its value exceeds the stated ceiling for one Lite payment. Available money and payment eligibility are separate checks. These figures are examples of the rule's arithmetic, not a claim about a particular application's approval behaviour.

How UPI Lite differs from ordinary UPI limits

SBI's guide lists ordinary UPI controls separately from Lite, including a standard transaction value limit of Rs 1 lakh and different limits for specified uses. Those bank-specific entries should not be substituted for the Lite limit. Equally, the Rs 1,000 Lite ceiling does not mean all ordinary UPI transfers are capped at that amount.

The same SBI page explains cooling periods after a UPI PIN is set or reset. These are separate security controls. A person troubleshooting a blocked payment therefore needs to establish which payment method was selected and which applicable control was reached. The displayed failure message and the bank's current terms can be more informative than a generic search result for a single limit.

Read the label attached to an amount: per payment, available balance or spending over a stated period. That small distinction answers most of the confusion behind searches for a Rs 2,000, Rs 5,000 or daily UPI Lite limit, without turning one product's ceiling into a rule for the entire payment system.
