Varanasi: In a significant move aimed at improving food safety and transparency, the Uttar Pradesh government has made it mandatory to display the laying (production) date and expiry date on every egg sold in the state from April 1, 2026. The decision is intended to ensure that consumers are aware of the freshness of the eggs they purchase and consume.

Until now, eggs were commonly sold without any date labeling, leaving consumers dependent on the seller’s claim regarding freshness. The poultry industry has expressed its agreement with the move, indicating readiness to comply with the new guidelines.
