UP Govt Makes Production & Expiry Dates Mandatory on Eggs from April 1, 2026

Varanasi: In a significant move aimed at improving food safety and transparency, the Uttar Pradesh government has made it mandatory to display the laying (production) date and expiry date on every egg sold in the state from April 1, 2026. The decision is intended to ensure that consumers are aware of the freshness of the eggs they purchase and consume.
Until now, eggs were commonly sold without any date labeling, leaving consumers dependent on the seller’s claim regarding freshness. With the implementation of this rule, the chances of old or stale eggs being sold as fresh are expected to reduce significantly. The measure is also seen as a step toward strengthening consumer rights and promoting informed purchasing decisions.
The poultry industry has expressed its agreement with the move, indicating readiness to comply with the new guidelines. Authorities have also made it clear that strict action will be taken against those who fail to follow the rule. The effectiveness of this initiative will now depend on how consistently it is enforced across markets and retail outlets in the state.
