Two-Year-Old Killed by Car Outside Sector 5 Home

GURUGRAM: A two-year-old child was killed after a car allegedly ran over her while she was playing outside her house in Sector 5 around 9pm on Monday, police said.

The child was identified as Adhiraj Tiwari. Her father, Virendra Tiwari, works as an engineer with an information technology company. Parents standing nearby rushed her to Manipal Hospital, where doctors declared her dead. Police later took custody of the body on Tuesday morning for postmortem examination.

Nearby CCTV cameras captured the sequence, police said. In the footage described by investigators, the car is seen taking a turn while the child was sitting and playing on the road outside the house. The driver allegedly failed to spot her and ran her over. The driver, who lives close to the Tiwari home in the same Sector 5 locality, stopped to check on the child and went with the family to the hospital, then later fled the scene, according to the police account.

A police control team reached the spot after receiving information, collected details and forwarded the matter to Sector 5 police station. Early investigation indicated the car was travelling at high speed even though the crash happened on an internal sector road, officers said. Speeding on a residential inner lane, if established, will sit at the centre of the negligence case alongside the driver's subsequent flight from the hospital.

Sector roads in older residential pockets often double as play space in the evening when traffic thins. That habit collides badly with cars taking tight turns without slowing to walking pace. A two-year-old seated near the carriageway edge has almost no chance once a turning vehicle fails to scan the curb line. CCTV may fix speed and path. It cannot undo the loss for a family that was standing only steps away.

Police have not, in the first public outline, released the driver's name or confirmed an arrest. The facts on record are the time, the Sector 5 location, the hospital declaration, the CCTV lead, the driver's brief presence at the hospital and his later disappearance from the scene. Sector 5 police will treat those points as the opening brief for a rash driving and negligence probe.

Monday night's crash adds to a string of child road deaths reported in the district within a short span, keeping pressure on traffic policing inside sectors rather than only on arterial corridors. Internal roads are supposed to be the safer layer of the network. When a car on a sector lane is alleged to have been fast enough to kill a toddler at a turn, that assumption fails in the most painful way.

Residents of Sector 5 will look for two outcomes: identification and custody of the alleged driver, and a clearer local enforcement message on evening speed inside housing grids. Until both arrive, the CCTV clip remains a grim document of how little room for error a playing child has when a turning car does not slow down.
