Two Workers Die After Wall Collapses at DLF Phase 2 School in Gurugram

GURUGRAM: Two workers died after a section of an outer wall collapsed at a private school in DLF Phase 2 on Friday afternoon, police said. The men had been carrying out landscaping work and had moved inside the building for shelter as heavy rain intensified when the wall gave way.

The victims were identified by police as Dayanand, 45, and Suraj, 35. Both were from Shahjahanpur in Uttar Pradesh's Meerut district. They were taken to the Civil Hospital in Sector 10A, where doctors declared them dead.

Renovation work was under way

According to police, the three-storey school building was undergoing renovation and strengthening, with extension work continuing for several months. Portions of the brick outer walls were also being dismantled as part of the work. The two men had been sent to the premises by a nursery owner engaged by the school management for plantation and beautification.

The collapse took place between 2 pm and 2.30 pm. Investigators said an eight-to-ten-foot section of the roughly ten-foot-high wall fell while the workers were sitting beside it. A police officer said continuous rain may have left the wall damp and weak, but the precise cause has not yet been established through a completed inquiry.

Other workers removed debris and rushed the men to hospital. An eyewitness said four workers had been sitting near the wall and one managed to move away after an alarm was raised. The account forms part of the information available to police and will need to be considered with the physical inspection of the site.

Police awaiting family's complaint

Gurugram Police said the bodies were kept at the government mortuary for post-mortem examination and would be handed over to the families after the procedure. One family had reached Gurugram by Friday night, while relatives of the other victim were still travelling.

No finding of criminal negligence had been announced at the time of reporting. Police said an FIR would be registered against the contractor and school authorities if the families alleged negligence. Any such complaint would begin an investigation; it would not by itself establish guilt.

The incident raises immediate questions that the site inquiry will have to answer: whether a wall being altered or demolished was adequately isolated, whether workers had a designated safe shelter during heavy rain, and whether the renovation area was being supervised when the weather worsened. These questions should be resolved through records, witness statements and an engineering assessment rather than assumption.

Families face sudden loss

Police said Suraj is survived by two minor daughters and Dayanand by a minor son. Their deaths place the focus first on the families and on a fair, prompt investigation. Reporting on the incident should not turn a workplace tragedy into spectacle or prejudge responsibility before authorities collect evidence.

Continuous monsoon rain has weakened structures and flooded worksites across Gurugram this week. Contractors and institutions carrying out construction during such conditions have a duty to reassess exposed walls, trenches, electrical equipment and shelter areas before allowing work to continue. The findings in this case will determine what happened at the school; the wider safety lesson is already difficult to ignore.
