Two Held for Alleged Bid to Run Over Men

GURUGRAM: Police have arrested two men for allegedly attempting to run over a man and his friends with a car at Sector 38 market over an old rivalry, officials said on Sunday. The Maruti Suzuki Baleno allegedly used in the incident has been recovered.

According to police, complainant Himanshu said he was at Sector 38 market with his friend Gaurav and others on 18 September when Sudesh alias Suraj and Rahul arrived in a Baleno and allegedly tried to run them over. The accused also allegedly threatened to kill them over the phone, police said.

An FIR was registered at Sadar police station on the basis of the complaint. The two accused were arrested on Saturday. They have been identified as Sudesh alias Suraj, a resident of Dhani Shobha village in Rewari district, and Rahul, a resident of Mau village near Pataudi in Gurugram district.

Complaint, arrests and what police allege

During interrogation, police found that Sudesh allegedly had an old rivalry with the complainant's friend and brother-in-law. He allegedly used Rahul's car to try to hit the complainant and his companions, officers said. The accused were produced before a duty magistrate and remanded in police custody for one day. Questioning continues.

The case is at the allegation and investigation stage. Police have recovered the vehicle named in the complaint and secured a short remand to probe the rivalry angle and the sequence at the market. No conviction has been recorded; the FIR and arrest briefs set out what the complainants and investigators allege.

Sector 38 market sees dense evening footfall, which makes a car allegedly driven at people on the market edge especially dangerous for bystanders as well as the intended targets. Investigators will also look at phone call records and market CCTV, if available, to test the complainant's account of the alleged threats and the Baleno's approach.
