Tamil Nadu opens MDS Round 1 resignation window without forfeiture till 24 September noon

CHENNAI: Joined MDS candidates who want to leave a Round 1 seat without losing money have a very short online window. The Selection Committee, Directorate of Medical Education and Research, Kilpauk, issued Notification No. 1152/SCSII(1)/2026 dated 23 September 2026. Resignation of Round 1 MDS seats in Government Dental Colleges and in Government Quota and Management Quota seats including NRI in self-financing dental colleges is allowed without forfeiture of security deposit and tuition fee only from 12:00 noon on 23 September 2026 to 12:00 noon on 24 September 2026.

The notice is addressed to academic year 2026-2027 MDS counselling. It is not a soft advisory. After noon on 24 September, the no-forfeiture resignation path closes.

How the online resignation works

The Committee says the resignation process is entirely online. Candidates who resign must download their Resignation Letter and submit it to the allotted college to get original certificates back. No offline resignation is allowed or accepted. Candidates are told not to withdraw the resignation after the stipulated date and time, and colleges are advised not to permit such withdrawals after noon on 24 September.

Round 1 joined candidates who give consent for re-allotment in Round 2 and then participate in Round 2 will face Round 2 rules, because they have exercised choices again. Round 1 joined candidates who neither participate in Round 2 nor resign will be treated as having retained their seats and will be treated as part of Round 2 after the deadline.

Why the noon deadline matters for Round 2

Tamil Nadu MDS Round 2 counselling is already on the calendar with vacancy lists and schedules published earlier in September. A clean resignation before noon on 24 September can free a seat and protect the candidate's deposit. Missing the window can mean keeping an unwanted seat or losing money if resignation rules change after the free period.

Colleges have been asked to keep offices working on Saturdays, Sundays and government holidays till the end of MDS counselling for 2026-2027. Candidates should log into the Selection Committee portal today, complete the online resignation if they are sure, download the letter, and hand it to the college for certificate release before the clock hits noon on 24 September.

Students who are unsure should read the Round 2 rules in the MDS prospectus before resigning. Resigning only to discover that Round 2 participation needs fresh consent or carries different forfeiture language can backfire. Those who are certain they will not continue in the Round 1 college should finish the portal steps early on 24 September instead of waiting for the last minutes before noon, when servers can slow.

Parents collecting originals should carry the downloaded Resignation Letter and a government ID when they visit the dental college office. Ask for a written acknowledgement that certificates have been returned. Keep a photocopy of the resignation letter with the counseling file until Round 2 allotment and joining are complete.
