Scooters, Laptops and Handmade Rakhis Lift Varanasi Festival Market

VARANASI: Raksha Bandhan shopping in Varanasi moved well beyond the traditional sweet box this year, with retailers reporting interest in scooters, motorcycles, smartphones, watches, laptops and Bluetooth speakers on the festival eve. Jewellery counters and clothing stores also saw customers looking for lighter designs and ready-to-gift purchases. The result was a broad retail rush rather than a boom confined to one lane or one type of shop.
UR Singh, vice-president of the Varanasi Automobile Dealers Association, said buyers purchased scooters for sisters and motorcycles for brothers, helped by promotional schemes. Jewellers saw demand for gold, silver and diamond pieces, particularly lower-weight designs that keep the ticket size manageable. Electronics appealed to students and young professionals, while designer clothing remained a familiar option for families who wanted a gift that could be used immediately.
Sweet shops were crowded with customers choosing laddus, ghevar, chandrakala, dry-fruit sweets, kaju katli and anjeer barfi. Sellers also noted interest in sugar-free varieties, reflecting the way festival menus are adapting to health restrictions within families. Attractive packaging did much of the commercial work: customers buying at the last minute could walk away with a present that looked prepared even when the decision was made at the counter.
A quieter part of the market belonged to local makers. Women from the Kajal self-help group sold handmade rakhis at the municipal headquarters, while buyers across the city looked for designs using rudraksha, wood, beads and mauli thread. “Evil eye” motifs and cartoon characters shared space with silver and gold pieces. The interest in handmade products offered small producers a seasonal window that mass-market imports can easily crowd out.
The sales account is based on trader observations rather than a citywide audited turnover figure, so it shows mood and product preference more clearly than total revenue. Even so, the mix is revealing. Varanasi's festival economy now connects neighbourhood sweet makers and self-help groups with vehicle showrooms and electronics stores. For buyers, it also underlines the need to keep invoices, compare finance costs and check warranties; a festive discount is valuable only when the final price and after-sales terms are clear.
Retailers will now have to manage the less festive side of the rush: deliveries, registration paperwork, exchanges and service complaints. Vehicle buyers should confirm insurance and registration costs rather than compare only the showroom price. Electronics buyers should insist on a tax invoice and sealed warranty details. For self-help groups, keeping a simple record of designs and sales can help turn a one-week opportunity into repeat orders during future festivals.
