GURUGRAM: The official calendar for SARAS Aajeevika Mela places the Gurugram edition at Leisure Valley Park from October 22 to November 6, giving residents a festive-season window to explore handlooms, handicrafts and products made by rural enterprises.

The Ministry of Rural Development's programme is built around self-help groups and artisans, including women entrepreneurs who sell directly to urban consumers. For a city shopper, the appeal is the chance to ask the person at the stall about materials, production and use, instead of relying entirely on packaging or an online product description.

What belongs on the shopping list

The ministry's outline includes regional handlooms, handicrafts, natural and organic products, and food. It describes market access and stronger livelihoods as the purpose of the fairs. The Gurugram date is part of a wider calendar that separately lists a food festival at Sunder Nursery in Delhi from November 21 to December 8.

That distinction matters when planning a visit. The later Delhi programme is a different event, at a different venue. Its dates and food-specific format should not be used to promise particular dishes, stalls or performances at Leisure Valley Park.

For Diwali gifting, it helps to decide the job a purchase needs to do before comparing designs. A table runner needs the right length; a basket needs usable dimensions; a handmade serving piece needs care instructions. Carrying measurements or a photograph of the space at home makes those decisions easier and reduces purchases that look appealing at a stall but never get used.

Ask the maker, then check the details

With textiles, ask about fibre, washing, colour transfer and whether the item is woven, printed or embroidered. With decorative objects, check weight, stability and protective packing. These questions are especially useful for gifts that must travel in luggage or be couriered to another city.

A maker's account of a product can be valuable without every promotional claim being taken at face value. If an item is described as organic, region-specific or certified, ask what documentation accompanies it. Before paying, confirm the final amount, obtain a bill or payment acknowledgement and note the seller's contact details for any later query.

The national calendar establishes the venue and dates; it does not settle this edition's daily opening hours, parking arrangements or individual stall inventory. Check those locally before setting out. Families should plan around walking, carrying purchases and finding a meeting point if their group separates, rather than trying to cover every stall in one sweep.

A focused visit can work better than an open-ended shopping marathon: browse first, compare materials and prices, then return to the pieces that fit the budget. SARAS gives Gurugram residents a route to buying from small producers. The most useful purchase is one whose maker, material and everyday purpose are all clear by the time it leaves the stall.
