Sanskrit University Vice-Chancellor Receives Honorary NCC Colonel Rank

VARANASI: The vice-chancellor of Sampurnanand Sanskrit University has been conferred an honorary Colonel rank by the National Cadet Corps, recognising the institution’s support for cadet activities and youth development.

The ceremonial title carries visibility, but it should be described accurately. An honorary NCC rank is not the same as a regular Army commission and does not confer operational command. Its purpose is to strengthen institutional leadership around cadet training and civic service.

For the university, the honour creates a responsibility to make the NCC unit stronger in practice. Cadets need regular parade space, trained staff, safe equipment and time to attend camps without academic penalty.

What NCC can offer

The corps introduces students to drill, fitness, first aid, disaster response and community service. It can also build confidence among students who have not previously worked in teams outside the classroom.

Participation should remain inclusive. Women cadets need equal access to training, leadership roles, travel and facilities. Students with disabilities can be involved in appropriate service and planning roles rather than being excluded from the programme’s public life.

Ceremony to measurable support

The university can mark the appointment by publishing a yearly NCC plan: enrolment, camps, community projects and resources committed. That would allow the honour to produce a visible institutional outcome.

Cadets can support blood-donation awareness, traffic education, riverfront cleanliness and emergency preparedness, but they should not be used as unpaid substitutes for professional services. Activities must include supervision, safety assessment and consent.

Academic flexibility is another practical issue. Students often miss classes or examinations while representing the unit. A clear policy for attendance and make-up work would prevent participation from becoming an academic disadvantage.

The honorary rank also offers a bridge between Sanskrit scholarship and contemporary civic service. Programmes on ethics, heritage conservation and disaster communication could draw on the university’s academic strengths while meeting NCC objectives.

Public institutions should avoid turning honorary titles into personal publicity. The most credible celebration would centre cadets, instructors and the facilities they need. If the vice-chancellor uses the recognition to secure stable support and broader participation, the ceremonial insignia will stand for a genuine partnership between the university and the NCC rather than a single day on the dais.

A short post-event report should record participation, costs and practical lessons. That routine transparency will help the institution improve the next edition and show whether the programme created value beyond its opening ceremony.
