20-Day Sahasrachandi Mahayagya Begins on Varanasi's Panchkoshi Route

VARANASI: The sound of Vedic chants and the movement of a kalash procession marked the beginning of a 20-day Sahasrachandi Mahayagya at Adi Shankaracharya Mahasansthanam on the Panchkoshi route on Monday.

The ceremony is being held under the guidance of Swami Narendranand Saraswati. A Live Hindustan report said the programme opened at 8 am with a procession carrying Ganga water from Shooltankeshwar Mahadev temple to the ashram. Devotees walked with decorated kalash while religious invocations accompanied the route.

At the yagyashala, the first sequence of rituals included Varun pujan, Ganga pujan and kalash pujan. Organisers have described the prayers as being dedicated to peace, public welfare and protection from natural calamities. The programme is scheduled to continue for 20 days, giving it a scale well beyond a single-day religious gathering.

The Panchkoshi route is not simply a road around Varanasi. It is one of Kashi's oldest sacred geographies, traditionally travelled by pilgrims as a circuit linking shrines, villages and resting points. Events held along it draw participants from the city as well as the rural belt, and they often create a temporary economy around flowers, vessels, food, transport and ritual supplies.

A long-duration yajna also requires coordination that visitors may not immediately see. Fire safety, crowd movement, drinking water, sanitation, parking and weather protection become daily concerns, particularly during a wet monsoon spell. The use of loudspeakers, temporary structures and open flames calls for disciplined supervision throughout the programme.
