Rohaniya Sewer Project: ₹1,400 Crore Network to Improve Drainage and Sanitation

Varanasi: Rohaniya in Varanasi is poised for a major infrastructure upgrade with the development of an extensive sewer network costing approximately ₹1,400 crore. Acting on the initiative of Mayor Ashok Kumar Tiwari, the Varanasi Municipal Corporation (Jal Nigam) has sent a detailed project report (DPR) to the state government for approval.

The project aims to strengthen basic civic amenities in newly expanded urban areas of the city. Under the proposal, a comprehensive sewer system will be developed across 13 newly extended wards of the Rohaniya Assembly constituency. The plan is expected to provide long-term relief from waterlogging, drainage issues, and sanitation-related problems that residents have been facing for years.

According to officials, the project has been designed keeping in mind the requirements of the next 30 years. Along with main sewer lines, branch sewer lines will also be constructed to ensure that every household can be connected to the sewer network.

Once implemented, the project will benefit nearly three lakh residents, offering relief from waterlogging and contaminated water, especially during the monsoon season. Authorities believe that improved drainage will prevent dirty water from accumulating on roads, significantly reducing the risk of infectious diseases and improving overall public health.

The areas covered under the proposal include Kandwa, Karondi, Dafi, Susuwahi, Narsur, Chhitaipur, Bhagwanpur, Chitaipur, Kanchanpur, Karmasa, Lahartara, Shivdaspur, and Manduadih, among others.

Officials said that the sewer and drainage systems in these areas have deteriorated due to rapid and unplanned urbanisation. With budget approval from the state government, the tender process will begin immediately, and construction work will be expedited.

The ambitious project is expected to bring a significant improvement in living conditions and mark a new phase of planned urban development in Rohaniya and adjoining areas of Varanasi.
