Roof of Rain-Soaked House Collapses in Benipur; 18 Family Members Escape

Eighteen members of two related families escaped injury after the roof of an old house collapsed in Benipur village in the Mirzamurad area, following a night of heavy rain. The structure gave way on Friday morning, damaging stored grain and household belongings but causing no reported casualties.

The house was occupied by the families of Subhash and Gulab. Thursday night’s rainfall had left the ageing roof saturated, and its weakened portion collapsed after daybreak. Family members were able to get clear, while neighbours gathered to help remove debris and recover whatever could still be used.

About a quintal of grain kept in the house was reported damaged, along with routine domestic items. For a rural household, that loss is more than a repair bill. Stored food is part of the family’s security between harvests, and damage to bedding, utensils or clothing can immediately disrupt daily life. The absence of physical injury was a relief, but the families now face the cost of making the house safe again.

Old village homes are especially vulnerable during sustained monsoon spells. Water can seep into earthen mortar, wooden supports and flat roofs long before a visible crack becomes alarming. When rain continues overnight, the additional weight and moisture can cause a weakened section to fail suddenly. A wall or roof that appears stable from outside may already have lost strength inside.

Residents of Benipur have asked the local administration to assess the damage and provide financial assistance. Such an inspection would establish which portion of the building is unsafe, document the loss and determine whether the household qualifies for relief under applicable schemes. Until an assessment is completed, people should avoid sleeping or storing goods under adjoining sections that show fresh cracks, sagging or water seepage.

The incident is also a reminder for village-level teams to identify vulnerable houses during prolonged rain, particularly those occupied by large families, older residents or children. Temporary relocation can be difficult, but even moving sleeping arrangements away from a visibly weakened room can reduce risk. Electricity to a damaged section should be isolated if wiring has been exposed to water.

In Benipur, the quick escape prevented the collapse from becoming a tragedy. The next task is less dramatic but equally important: clearing the site safely, protecting the family’s remaining possessions and securing a timely official survey. With more monsoon weather possible, the condition of the rest of the structure will need attention before the household can treat it as safe.
