Nagar Nigam Orders CCTV, Lights and Open Gym at Pishachmochan Kund Ahead of Pitru Paksha

Municipal Commissioner Himanshu Nagpal, during a Sunday, 6 September 2026, inspection of heritage waterbodies, ordered lighting, CCTV cameras and an open gym at Pishachmochan Kund, an RCC boundary wall to replace damaged masonry at Ram Kund, and a new grand entrance gate with railing and painting work at Pitarkunda Talab. Corporator Sindhu Sonkar was associated with the round. The orders were reported in the early Monday, 7 September, municipal wrap, with Pitru Paksha beginning 26 September cited as the calendar pressure on the sites.

Pishachmochan is among Varanasi’s ritual tanks that draw devotees through the year and spike in footfall when ancestral rites intensify. CCTV and lighting are security and after-dark safety measures. The open gym is a civic-amenity add beside the kund rather than a temple alteration. Those three items are the Pishachmochan package from Sunday’s inspection.

Ram Kund’s brief is structural: damaged boundary wall to be replaced with RCC, railings repaired, surfaces painted. Pitarkunda’s brief is access and presentation: a new grand entrance gate, railings, painting and cleanliness. The three sites sit in one inspection narrative but carry distinct work lists.

Pitru Paksha from 26 September is the date Nagpal’s round used as the deadline logic. Ritual calendars do not wait for municipal tenders. If lighting poles, camera mounts and gate fabrication slip past late September, the city will host the fortnight with half-finished edges. That is why the inspection-to-order gap was compressed into a Sunday–Monday civic story rather than a vague beautification promise.

Corporator Sindhu Sonkar’s presence ties the ward politics to the same work list. Heritage kunds in dense mohallas need both engineering and local political cover when cameras go up and walls come down. The municipal commissioner’s order supplies the engineering instruction; the corporator’s association supplies the ward-facing accountability.

Devotees who use these tanks measure readiness by whether steps are clean, approaches are lit, and queues can move. An open gym will matter to morning walkers; CCTV will matter to women and elders after dusk. The municipal test is whether those assets are actually installed before 26 September, not whether they were announced on 7 September.
