Passengers Evacuated Safely as Gurugram City Bus Catches Fire Near Sirhaul

GURUGRAM: Passengers were evacuated without injury after a Gurugram city bus caught fire near Sirhaul village in Sector 18 on Thursday morning. The driver stopped Route 215B after smoke was noticed near a tyre, allowing everyone on board to get off before flames spread through the vehicle.

The bus was travelling from the Sector 12 bus stand towards Dundahera when the incident occurred at about 9.30am. Fire services received the call shortly after 10am and sent two tenders from Udyog Vihar and Maruti stations. Officers said the blaze was controlled within 30 to 40 minutes.

Quick evacuation prevented injuries

Officials estimated that five to 10 passengers were on board. None was reported injured. Police managed traffic on Old Delhi-Gurugram Road and helped clear the damaged vehicle after the fire was extinguished, allowing normal movement to resume.

The cause remains under investigation. Preliminary information points to a failure in an air-suspension component near a tyre, after which smoke was seen, but that initial account is not a final technical finding. Investigators will need to examine the wheel assembly, braking system, electrical wiring and maintenance record before identifying the source.

Fleet condition returns to focus

Gurugram's bus operator currently runs a fleet of about 150 vehicles. Operational data cited by officials indicates that roughly 20 to 25 buses can be unavailable because of breakdowns on an average day. The service began in 2018 with 200 low-floor CNG buses; 50 were transferred to Faridabad in 2021.

Two earlier bus-fire incidents, one near Sector 51 this April and another near Mahavir Chowk last year, add urgency to the maintenance review. Repetition does not prove a common cause, but it does justify comparing component failures, service intervals and inspection findings across the vehicles involved.

Replacement cannot wait for retirement dates

The operator's board approved replacing 25 ageing buses with BS-VI CNG vehicles in July. Around 100 existing buses are scheduled to reach the end of their concession period in June 2029, with the remainder following by August that year. Keeping service dependable until then will require preventive maintenance rather than breakdown-led repair.

Thursday's outcome was fortunate and reflects the value of a driver acting at the first sign of smoke. The operator should now publish the technical cause, inspect similar components across the fleet and confirm that extinguishers, emergency exits and driver drills are in order. For passengers, a safe evacuation is reassuring; preventing the next fire is the real test.
