A new name started showing up on laptop spec sheets this week: NVIDIA RTX Spark. Microsoft and NVIDIA used a joint Windows event on 7 October to launch a wave of laptops built around it, from Surface, ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo and MSI. Pre-orders are open in the US and the machines start shipping on 16 October.

If you are wondering what RTX Spark is, whether it matters to you, and whether you should hold off on a laptop purchase in India because of it, here is a plain explanation.

What RTX Spark actually is

RTX Spark is what NVIDIA calls a superchip. Instead of a separate processor from Intel or AMD and a separate NVIDIA graphics card, it puts both on one package. According to NVIDIA's announcement, it combines an NVIDIA Blackwell RTX GPU with up to 6,144 cores and an NVIDIA Grace CPU with up to 20 cores, connected at 600GB/s.

The CPU side is built on Arm, like the chips in phones and in Apple's Mac laptops, rather than the x86 design used in most Windows PCs. That is the biggest change for Windows users, and it has consequences for software and games, which we come to below.

The other key idea is unified memory. RTX Spark supports up to 128GB of memory shared between the CPU and GPU. In a normal gaming laptop, the graphics card has its own smaller pool of memory, often 8GB to 16GB. Sharing one large pool lets the chip handle much bigger AI models.

Why Microsoft and NVIDIA care so much about AI

NVIDIA rates RTX Spark at up to one petaflop of AI performance, a figure based on a low-precision format called FP4. Microsoft's Surface team says that means the Surface Laptop Ultra can run AI models with more than 120 billion parameters on the laptop itself, without the cloud.

In its hybrid intelligence post, Microsoft also claims that RTX Spark PCs are up to 2.1 times faster to the first token of an AI answer, 4.3 times faster at AI image generation and 6.2 times faster at AI video generation than an Apple MacBook Pro 16-inch with M5 Pro. These are the company's own tests, and independent reviews will tell the real story.

For a developer, a researcher or a creator who runs large models locally, this is a genuine shift. NVIDIA also points to hardware AV1 encoding and 4:2:2 video encode and decode, which matter to video editors working with high-end camera footage. For someone who writes documents, attends video calls and watches films, it is a lot of power that will mostly sit idle.

Which laptops use it

Microsoft listed the first RTX Spark machines available for pre-order. They are the ASUS ProArt P16 and ProArt P14, the Dell XPS 16 Creator Edition, the HP OmniBook Ultra 16, the Lenovo Yoga 9n 2-in-1, the MSI Prestige N16 Flip AI+ with a 99.9Wh battery, and Microsoft's own Surface Laptop Ultra. Microsoft says RTX Spark dev boxes and mini desktops will follow later this year.

At the very top, Microsoft and NVIDIA also announced DGX Station for Windows, a deskside machine built on NVIDIA's GB300 Grace Blackwell Ultra Desktop Superchip. NVIDIA says it has 748GB of coherent memory and up to 20 petaflops of FP4 AI compute, enough for models at the trillion-parameter scale. It is aimed at research labs and companies, and it is due later this year.

The only firm price so far is Microsoft's. The Surface Laptop Ultra starts at USD 2,599, and Microsoft's India page shows that dollar figure without a rupee price (price as of 8 October 2026, 1:25 AM IST). None of the other makers has announced India prices for their RTX Spark models yet.

What about games?

This is where the Arm switch matters. Microsoft says it has spent several years improving gaming on Arm-based Windows PCs, including its Prism emulation for x86 software, support from anti-cheat providers and Xbox PC app compatibility. It names Fortnite, Alan Wake 2 and World of Warcraft as playable, says titles such as League of Legends, Valorant, PUBG: Battlegrounds and Genshin Impact are coming soon, and says Call of Duty will come to RTX Spark in 2027.

NVIDIA claims AAA games can run at 1440p at over 100 frames per second with DLSS 5. That sounds strong, but notice the "coming soon" list. If a specific game you play is not confirmed for Arm, a conventional gaming laptop is still the safer purchase.

Should Indian buyers wait?

For most people, no. These are premium machines with no India prices, and early Arm laptops can have rough edges with older software, printers and niche apps. If you are a developer or AI researcher who wants to run large models locally, it is worth watching for India launch dates and prices from Dell, HP, Lenovo and ASUS, which usually bring premium laptops here. The one-line version

RTX Spark is NVIDIA's bet that the next big Windows laptop is an Arm machine with a powerful built-in GPU and lots of shared memory for AI. It is exciting for people who build and run AI tools. For everyone else, it is a sign of where Windows laptops are heading, not a reason to delay a purchase this festive season.
