The Ministry of Education has extended the last date for National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme applications for 2026-27 to 31 October 2026. News On AIR reported the ministry statement on 1 October, saying the extra time is meant to help eligible students finish forms on the National Scholarship Portal and to give nodal officers room for verification.

Students who have already applied must still push institute-level (L1) verification by 15 November 2026 and district-level (L2) verification by 30 November 2026. As of the day before the announcement, more than 88,000 fresh applications and more than 1.97 lakh renewal applications had been filed.

Applications continue on the National Scholarship Portal. Scheme background and school-level guidance remain on the Ministry's NMMSS page.

Who the scholarship is for

NMMSS supports meritorious students from economically weaker sections so they can continue from Class 9 through Class 12. The scheme awards one lakh fresh scholarships each year to Class 9 students who clear the State or UT selection test, then continues the award in Classes 10 to 12 through renewal if academic conditions are met.

Eligible students in State government, government-aided and local-body schools receive Rs 12,000 a year, paid into the student's bank account through direct benefit transfer. To sit the selection test, a student must have secured at least 55 percent marks or the equivalent grade in Class 7, with a five percentage-point relaxation for SC and ST students. Parental income must not exceed Rs 3.50 lakh a year.

Schools that have not yet completed One Time Registration steps on NSP should clear those first. Incomplete OTR or locked Aadhaar biometrics commonly block fresh submissions even when the student is otherwise eligible.

What schools and parents should do this month

Class 9 aspirants and Class 10 to 12 renewal students should submit or correct applications well before 31 October rather than on the last evening. Institute nodal officers need time before the 15 November L1 cut-off to verify documents, and district officers need a clear queue before 30 November.

Keep income certificates, prior-year marksheets and bank details consistent with the Aadhaar-seeded account used for DBT. If a school has already submitted a form, parents should ask the nodal officer for the current verification status instead of filing a duplicate.

States and Union Territories still run their own NMMSS selection tests for fresh Class 9 awards. Clearing the State test does not replace the NSP application. Both steps matter: the board or SCERT circular covers the exam, while the portal calendar covers the scholarship form and verification chain.

Renewal students in Classes 10 to 12 should confirm that last year's academic promotion and attendance meet the renewal rules before they assume the extended 31 October date alone will save an incomplete file. Schools with a large pending queue should schedule verification camps well before mid-November.

For the extended student deadline and verification dates, treat the Ministry's 1 October statement carried by News On AIR together with the live application workflow on scholarships.gov.in as the working instructions. State education departments may add local selection-test circulars, but the NSP calendar controls the online application close.
