NMC publishes postgraduate seat matrix for 2026-27 as on 29 September

The Medical Assessment and Rating Board of the National Medical Commission has placed the postgraduate seat matrix for academic year 2026-27 in the public domain as on 29 September 2026. The matrix lists medical colleges and institutions with the PG courses and annual intake that MARB has approved for counselling this year.

A covering letter from NMC Secretary Dr Raghav Langer, and a public notice signed by MARB President Dr M. K. Ramesh, both dated 29 September 2026, accompany the spreadsheet-style annexure. The full packet is available on the NMC what's-new download for the 29 September PG seat matrix.

What the matrix includes and what it leaves out

MARB says the enclosed seats are those approved as on the date of the notice. The matrix does not yet include applications for an increase in intake of existing PG courses or for new PG courses for 2026-27. When such approvals come through later, NMC says they will appear in an updated matrix on the Commission website.

The notice also warns that the present list can change after decisions of MARB, an appeal committee or another competent authority. Counselling bodies are told to use the latest notified matrix, not an older download sitting on a local drive.

Hard line on excess admissions

All medical colleges must admit students only against the approved number of seats. Admissions beyond approved intake, the notice says, would violate the National Medical Commission Act, 2019, and the regulations under it, and can draw regulatory action against the college.

Counselling committees of the Centre and the States or Union Territories are asked to follow the matrix. If a committee spots an error or a mismatch, it must refer the issue to MARB before counselling proceeds. Uttar Pradesh entries on the list

The annexure runs into thousands of course rows across States. Uttar Pradesh institutions appear with both government and other categories. Entries include Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital, Varanasi, with MD seats in Anaesthesiology, Radiation Oncology and Radio-Diagnosis; Command Hospital, Lucknow; BRD Medical College, Gorakhpur; and several private and deemed colleges such as Santosh Medical College, Ghaziabad. Aspirants should read the official file for exact course-wise numbers rather than rely on secondary summaries.

What candidates and colleges should do

PG aspirants preparing for NEET-PG based counselling should treat this matrix as the baseline for which MD, MS, DM and M.Ch seats are currently cleared for 2026-27. Colleges must reconcile their own permission letters with the public list and flag any mismatch to MARB promptly.

NMC has copied State medical education departments, the Medical Counselling Committee under DGHS, and its own board presidents on the covering letter. The practical message is simple: publish the seats, keep them current, and do not admit beyond what MARB has approved.

MCC and State counselling authorities that run PG seat allocation will need to refresh any local copies of the matrix before they open choice filling for the 2026-27 PG season. The covering letter specifically marks the Medical Counselling Committee under DGHS as an addressee for necessary action.

Colleges that applied for new PG courses or for higher intake should not advertise those seats until they appear in a later NMC update. Until then, the 29 September matrix is the public ceiling for counselling. Students comparing brochure claims with the NMC file should trust the Commission list when the two disagree.
