Amazon has redesigned its whole Kindle e-reader line, from the basic six-inch model to the colour Colorsoft, and announced it on 1 October 2026. The new devices went on sale or preorder that day in 19 countries. India is not on the list.
The headline change is the screen. Amazon says every model now has a flush front, with no raised border around the display, and colour that wraps from front to back. It calls the new build a reverse stack display, which it says is a first for e-readers. The colours across the range are Ube, Alpine Sky, Seaglass Green and Graphite, and Fig comes to an e-reader for the first time.
The models and US prices
The basic Kindle is now a six-inch device with 16GB of storage, up to six weeks of battery life and book opening that Amazon says is 30 per cent faster than the previous model. It costs 149.99 dollars in Ube, a purple shade, and Graphite. A version with an aluminium back and 32GB costs 189.99 dollars in Alpine Sky and Seaglass Green.
The Kindle Paperwhite is thinner and lighter, waterproof, with an adjustable warm light and up to 12 weeks of battery life. It starts at 199.99 dollars with 16GB in Graphite. The Signature Edition adds an aluminium back, 32GB, an auto-adjusting light, dock charging and double tap to turn pages, for 249.99 dollars. Amazon says the Paperwhite screen uses an oxide thin-film transistor backplane and is the largest and highest-contrast Paperwhite display it has made.
The Kindle Colorsoft gets a redesigned colour display, with nitride LEDs in the light guide that Amazon says lift colour and brightness without washing out detail. It starts at 289.99 dollars with 16GB, and the 32GB Signature Edition costs 319.99 dollars in Graphite and Fig. Kids versions of all three start at 179.99 dollars and come with a 12-month Amazon Kids+ subscription. All prices are US prices as of 6 October 2026, 06:30 IST, as listed in Amazon's announcement.
Accessories
Amazon is adding a small Bluetooth page-turn remote called Kindle Click for 34.99 dollars, which works with the new devices and Kindle models from 2024 onwards. A magnetic Page-Turn Cover with physical buttons costs 79.99 dollars and a charging dock costs 59.99 dollars; both work only with the Signature Editions. Covers start at 39.99 dollars and come in knit fabric, plant-based leather and pebbled leather, with slim magnetic covers for the aluminium models.
Where it is sold, and where it is not
Amazon says the Kindle and its aluminium version are available from launch day in the US, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Ireland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Sweden, Poland, Japan, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Egypt and Australia. The Paperwhite and Colorsoft opened for preorder in the same countries on a rolling basis. The new Kids Kindle is on sale now, and the Kids Colorsoft is on preorder in the US, Canada, the UK, Germany and Japan.
Amazon's announcement gives prices only in dollars, so readers in the UK, the UAE or Australia will need to check their local store for local prices. The announcement says nothing about an Indian launch, so buyers here will have to wait for an India listing.
The numbers behind the redesign
Amazon says Kindle has grown by double digits worldwide for three years in a row, and that readers turned more than 720 billion pages in 2025. It also says the housing of the base model uses recycled materials and a battery made with 100 per cent recycled cobalt, while the aluminium version uses 80 per cent recycled aluminium. It adds that children reading on a Kindle spend more than an hour a day with it on average.
It is the second recent case of a big launch skipping India. Googlebook laptops went on sale from 899 dollars in the US without an Indian date, while Samsung did give India a date for the Galaxy Tab S12 series. For e-readers, the question for Indian buyers is simply when the new range reaches the local store.
