MoE selects 48 teachers for National Awards 2026; President to confer on 5 September

On Teachers’ Day, 5 September 2026, President Droupadi Murmu will present the National Teachers’ Awards at Vigyan Bhawan. The Department of School Education and Literacy (DoSEL) under the Ministry of Education has already named the 48 school teachers who will walk that stage — 22 women and 26 men, drawn from 27 States, 7 Union Territories and 6 Central organisations.

The list is national recognition, not a ranked scoreboard. MoE has said the published names are not arranged in merit order. Uttar Pradesh has the highest state tally this year, with three teachers selected from the state. That count marks UP’s share of awardees; it is not a ranking of state school systems.

How the 48 were chosen

Nominations ran online from 15 June to 20 July 2026 on nationalawardstoteachers.education.gov.in. Selection moved through three stages — district, state and national. Teachers from state school systems, UT administrations and Central organisations all sat in that pipeline.

DoSEL and MoE have framed the awards around classroom practice and school-level work. Schools that put forward names during the nomination window should use the official portal and MoE communication for the confirmed list. Secondary forwards that reshuffle names or invent ranks are a common noise source every August; the portal list is the one that counts.

Teachers who were never nominated between 15 June and 20 July are outside this cycle. Anyone hoping for a late addition after 20 July will not find a fresh nomination button on the awards site for 2026. The next round, when announced, will again open on the same portal.

Vigyan Bhawan on 5 September

The conferment is fixed for Teachers’ Day at Vigyan Bhawan. Short documentaries on the awardees form part of the programme. Live coverage is planned on Doordarshan, on SWAYAM PRABHA channels, and through webcast.gov.in/moe.

Many schools will hold their own Teachers’ Day assemblies the same morning. Those local events sit beside the national ceremony; they do not replace it. Education departments that want staff to watch the formal conferment should point them to the broadcast and webcast channels MoE has listed, rather than to unofficial streams.

No award quantum, speech texts or individual teacher quotations are part of the selection announcement used for this report.
