Varanasi, April 2026: In a major push toward urban modernization, Varanasi is set to witness the development of the ambitious “Namo Banaras Kendra” project at the Cantonment’s Mal Godam site. The proposal has been officially approved by the Varanasi Municipal Corporation, marking a significant step in strengthening the city’s commercial infrastructure.

The project, estimated at ₹145.36 crore, will be developed over 0.82 hectares and will feature a G+6 multi-storey commercial complex with a built-up area exceeding 48,000 square meters. The initiative aims to meet the growing urban and economic demands of the rapidly expanding city.

844 Shops to Support Traders and Traditional Industries

A key highlight of the project is the construction of 844 shops, with sizes ranging from 155 to 655 square feet, designed to accommodate a wide range of businesses.

In a move to support traditional sectors, priority in shop allocation will be given to:

Officials believe this will not only provide a modern and organized marketplace but also help preserve and promote Varanasi’s traditional industries while improving accessibility for customers.

Funding Model to Reduce Civic Burden

The financing structure of the project has been designed to minimize pressure on municipal resources. Around ₹100 crore will be raised directly from traders, while the remaining ₹45.36 crore will be funded through savings from the State Finance Commission grants.

Authorities have emphasized that this balanced funding approach ensures sustainable development without overburdening the civic body.

Boost to Smart Infrastructure and Connectivity

Alongside physical infrastructure, Varanasi is also advancing its digital ecosystem. Free Wi-Fi services are already operational at major ghats, and plans are underway to extend connectivity to key public institutions across the city.

This integrated approach reflects a broader vision of transforming Varanasi into a modern, smart urban center while retaining its cultural and commercial heritage.

A Step Toward Future-Ready Varanasi

The Namo Banaras Kendra project is expected to significantly enhance the city’s commercial landscape, offering better facilities for traders, improved organization of markets, and increased economic opportunities.

As Varanasi continues to evolve, projects like this highlight a clear focus on inclusive growth, modernization, and support for traditional livelihoods.
