MoE extends NMMSS 2026-27 applications to 30 September 2026

The Ministry of Education has extended the last date for National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme (NMMSS) 2026-27 applications on the National Scholarship Portal to 30 September 2026. The Press Information Bureau release is dated 01 September 2026, 6:25 pm, PIB Delhi (Release ID: 2305633). Selected meritorious students now have until 30.09.2026 to submit applications on NSP.

The extended verification timeline is printed alongside the application deadline. Last date for Institute Nodal Officer (INO) verification at Level-1 (L1) is 15.10.2026. Last date for District Nodal Officer (DNO) verification at Level-2 (L2) is 31.10.2026. The NSP portal has been open for student applications with effect from 1 June 2026. For project year 2026-27, selected students must complete a one-time registration (OTR) on NSP and then apply for the scholarship scheme they have selected. Filing the form without OTR leaves the application incomplete on the portal.

What NMMSS pays, who is covered, and how money moves

NMMSS is implemented by the Department of School Education and Literacy, Union Ministry of Education. It awards scholarships to meritorious students from economically weaker sections to prevent drop-out after Class VIII and to encourage completion of schooling up to Class XII. The scheme provides one lakh fresh scholarships every year for Class IX students who clear the qualifying exam conducted by State or UT governments. Renewal continues from Classes X to XII on academic performance. It applies only to students studying in State Government, Government-aided and local body schools. The scholarship amount is Rs.12,000 per annum per student.

Disbursement is direct into selected students' bank accounts by electronic transfer through the Public Financial Management System (PFMS) in DBT mode. Eligibility parameters printed in the PIB release include parental income of not more than Rs.3.50 lakh per annum, and a minimum of 55% marks or equivalent grade in the Class VII examination for appearing in the selection test (relaxable by 5% for SC/ST students). Private-school students outside the named Government, Government-aided and local body categories are outside the scheme as printed.

As of 31.08.2026, 79,398 fresh and 1,87,208 renewal applications had been submitted on NSP. Students who have already filed should still ensure Institute, District or State nodal verification is completed within the extended L1 and L2 dates. An unverified application does not move to disbursement on the strength of submission alone.

Portal, verification levels and the only clock that matters

NMMSS runs through the National Scholarship Portal, the one-stop platform for Government of India scholarship schemes. On NSP, Level-1 verification is by the Institute Nodal Officer; Level-2 is by the District Nodal Officer. The PIB release advises all eligible students to finish applications within the extended timeline and to track verification status after submission.
