Maruti Suzuki domestic passenger vehicle sales rise 37% in September, SUVs up 62%

NEW DELHI: Maruti Suzuki India sold 1,81,838 passenger vehicles in the domestic market in September 2026, against 1,32,820 in the same month last year, a rise of about 37 per cent. The company's monthly sales release, issued on 1 October, shows utility vehicles doing most of the lifting.
Total sales, which add exports and supplies to other manufacturers, came to 2,36,013 units, up from 1,89,665 a year earlier. Domestic sales including light commercial vehicles stood at 1,85,252 units.
SUVs and MPVs grow fastest
The utility vehicle group, which Maruti defines to include Brezza, Ertiga, e Vitara, Fronx, Grand Vitara, Invicto, Jimny, Victoris and XL6, sold 78,911 units. A year ago the same group sold 48,695, so the segment grew by about 62 per cent.
The mini, compact and mid-size car group covers Alto, Baleno, Celerio, Ciaz, Dzire, Ignis, S-Presso, Swift and WagonR. It sold 91,887 units, up from 74,090, a gain of about 24 per cent. It is still the largest block of Maruti's domestic volume, but its lead over utility vehicles is now only about 13,000 units.
The Eeco van added 11,040 units against 10,035. The Super Carry light commercial vehicle sold 3,414 units against 2,891.
Counting supplies to other manufacturers, Maruti's domestic dispatches were 1,91,794 units against 1,47,461, or about 30 per cent more. The Eeco's half-year total is 73,454 units against 66,266, and the Super Carry's is 20,020 against 16,967.
Two other lines barely moved or went the other way. Sales to other original equipment manufacturers fell to 6,542 units from 11,750, a drop of about 44 per cent. Exports rose to 44,219 units from 42,204, an increase of under 5 per cent.
The April to September picture
Across the first half of the financial year, domestic passenger vehicle sales reached 10,80,240 units, compared with 7,95,446 in April to September 2025. That is growth of about 36 per cent. Utility vehicles contributed 4,55,692 of those units, up from 3,17,379, while the mini, compact and mid-size cars contributed 5,51,094, up from 4,11,801.
Exports for the six months stand at 2,32,855 units against 2,07,459. Taking everything together, Maruti's total sales for April to September were 13,79,378 units, up from 10,78,735, a gain of about 28 per cent.
Put plainly, the first six months of this financial year have added roughly 2.85 lakh domestic passenger vehicles over last year's run, and the utility vehicle group alone accounts for about 1.38 lakh of that gain.
What these figures are and are not
Company sales releases of this kind count vehicles sent to dealers. They are not the same as registrations in a buyer's name, which FADA and the VAHAN dashboard track separately. A strong dispatch month can reflect stocking ahead of the festive season as much as showroom footfall.
The release gives no model-wise split, so it cannot say which individual car or SUV drove the utility vehicle jump. It also does not break out petrol, CNG and electric volumes, even though e Vitara appears in the utility vehicle list.
For buyers in Gurugram and the rest of Delhi NCR, the numbers change no price or waiting period. They show where Maruti is putting its production: more than four in ten domestic passenger vehicles dispatched in September were SUVs and MPVs rather than hatchbacks or sedans.
