Manduadih Teacher Neelam Rai Wins State Award

VARANASI: Neelam Rai, an assistant teacher at Manduadih Primary School, has been selected for the Uttar Pradesh State Teacher Award for work that helped the school meet foundational-learning goals and improve its overall academic performance.

The award will be presented on Teachers' Day, Amar Ujala reported. Rai was selected on the recommendation of a state-level committee that met on August 13, 14, 18 and 19, 2025. Four nominations had been forwarded from Varanasi, and candidates went through interviews in April and again in Lucknow in August.

Rai is originally from Ballia, where she completed her education, and now works in Varanasi. Her husband, Vikram Pathak, is employed at a bank in the city. She credited colleagues and the wider school community after learning of the selection.

The state award process uses a 100-point assessment. Forty marks are attached to objective indicators, another 40 to performance-based work and 20 to presentation and interview. The indicators include growth in enrolment, reduction in dropout, progress under the Nipun Bharat mission, teaching innovation, use of digital tools, student learning outcomes and contribution to school development.

That framework matters because a teaching award should recognise more than a polished classroom demonstration. Foundational literacy and numeracy are built through daily attendance, regular assessment, patient remediation and communication with families. Improvements become sustainable when several teachers can use the same methods, not when a single award-winner carries the entire system.

The recognition includes a ₹20,000 cash award and a two-year service extension, according to the report. Those benefits make the selection professionally meaningful, but the larger opportunity is to document the practices that worked in Manduadih and make them usable elsewhere. A neighbouring school should be able to learn how enrolment was retained, how children below grade level were supported and which digital tools were genuinely useful.

“Nipun” is a milestone, not a permanent label. Children move between classes, new pupils enrol and learning can slip if assessment becomes ceremonial. Continued monitoring will show whether the gains associated with Rai's work hold across cohorts.

State awards often produce a photograph, a citation and a brief moment on stage. The most valuable follow-up would happen back in Varanasi: demonstration classes, teacher mentoring and open sharing of lesson plans with schools facing similar challenges.

Rai's selection places Manduadih Primary School on a state list. What gave it that place was less visible—the accumulated work of getting children into school, keeping them there and helping them master the first skills on which every later lesson depends.
