Man Pushes Friend Into Varuna River Following Heated Argument

Varanasi: A casual evening between two friends turned into a tragedy when a heated dispute led to the alleged murder of a local resident. According to the Varanasi police, a man was pushed to his death into the Varuna River by his long-time friend following an alcohol-fueled argument over domestic visits.

The authorities have arrested the accused, who has reportedly confessed to the crime during initial interrogation.

A Call from Home Triggers Tragedy

The incident unfolded on Monday evening along the banks of the Varuna River. According to police reports, the victim, identified as Ramesh Kumar, and the accused, Suresh Prasad, had gathered near the riverbank for a drinking session.

The atmosphere took a tense turn when Ramesh received a phone call from his wife, who was asking him to return home for dinner. The phone call sparked an abrupt and intense argument between the two men. Investigators revealed that the duo had a deep-seated, ongoing dispute regarding their social boundaries—specifically, a long-standing disagreement over visiting each other's households.

As the argument escalated under the influence of alcohol, Suresh allegedly lost his temper and violently shoved Ramesh off the edge of the riverbank into the fast-flowing waters of the Varuna River.

Rescue Efforts and Police Action

Witnesses or passersby who noticed the commotion alerted the local police, prompting an immediate search and rescue operation. Local divers and a team from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) were deployed to scour the river. Unfortunately, due to the heavy currents, Ramesh could not be saved in time, and his body was later recovered downstream.

The local police station cordoned off the area and launched an immediate manhunt for the suspect.

"Our teams acted swiftly following the incident. The accused was apprehended from a nearby hiding spot within hours of the crime. During questioning, he admitted that the escalation was entirely spontaneous, fueled by alcohol and a pre-existing personal grievance regarding family visits." — Senior Investigating Officer, Varanasi Police
