MUMBAI: Mahindra and Mahindra sold 64,092 SUVs in the domestic market in September, up 14 per cent from 56,233 a year earlier, and said it has crossed 1 lakh billings of its Electric Origin SUVs since launch. The numbers came in the company's sales release of 1 October.
Total auto sales, which include utility vehicles, light commercial vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes, three-wheelers and exports, were 1,14,874 units, a 15 per cent rise on last September.
"In September, SUV sales clocked 64092 units with a growth of 14%, and total vehicle sales stood at 114874, a 15% YoY growth," said Dr Velusamy R, President, Automotive Business at Mahindra and Mahindra. "Adding to this momentum, we are proud to have crossed the milestone of 1 lakh billing of our Electric Origin SUVs since launch."
Year to date
From April to September, Mahindra's domestic SUV sales were 3,58,142 units, up 20 per cent from 2,97,570 in the same period of the previous financial year. The utility vehicle figure includes sales by its subsidiary Mahindra Electric Automobile Limited, so the electric SUVs are counted inside the 64,092 and not on top of it.
The SUV business is the biggest block in the company's September total. The 64,092 domestic SUVs make up about 56 per cent of the 1,14,874 vehicles sold, with commercial vehicles, three-wheelers and exports making up the rest.
Commercial vehicles and three-wheelers
Domestic commercial vehicle sales were 30,420 units, a growth of 14 per cent. Light commercial vehicles under 2 tonnes sold 4,044 units, up 19 per cent. Those between 2 and 3.5 tonnes sold 26,376 units, up 13 per cent, and that group includes the Bolero Maxx pickup in its HD 1.9 and HD 2.0 forms.
Three-wheelers, electric ones included, sold 16,343 units against 13,017, a rise of about 26 per cent. The half-year tally is 82,058 units compared with 53,578, up 53 per cent. Sales of Mahindra Last Mile Mobility Limited are folded into these figures.
Exports were the soft spot. The company shipped 4,019 vehicles, down 7 per cent from 4,320. For April to September, however, exports are at 30,031 units against 20,303, up 48 per cent.
What the release leaves out
The release does not say how many of the 64,092 SUVs were electric in September. It gives the 1 lakh mark as a cumulative figure since the Electric Origin range went on sale, with no launch date, model split or monthly breakup. It should not be read as a September sales number.
It also does not define "billing". That is a company measure and is not the same as a registration in a customer's name, which shows up later on the VAHAN dashboard.
The release is also silent on how the growth was split between petrol, diesel and electric models, and it does not name the models behind the Electric Origin tally.
Nothing in the document touches festive orders, waiting periods or price changes. For anyone planning a purchase around Navratri and Diwali, the practical step is the usual one: ask the dealer for the current delivery timeline for the exact variant and colour, and get both the ex-showroom and on-road quotes in writing.
