Residents of Varanasi are set to face a two-day disruption in drinking water supply as the Jal Kal Department undertakes major maintenance work at the Bhadaini Pump House, one of the city’s most critical water supply units. The shutdown will remain in effect from Sunday evening through Monday, impacting large parts of the city.

According to officials, the disruption is necessary to facilitate the installation of Air Release Valves (ARVs) and flow meters, aimed at improving water distribution efficiency and long-term supply management. After multiple rounds of technical review, authorities approved a mega shutdown on December 28 and 29 to safely carry out the work.

Areas Affected

Water supply to most parts of Varanasi will remain suspended during this period. However, officials clarified that Varunapar areas will continue to receive water supply without interruption.

Advisory Issued for Residents

Jal Kal General Manager Anup Kumar Singh urged residents to store sufficient water in advance, especially on Sunday morning, when limited supply will still be available. He assured that all efforts are being made to complete the maintenance work within the stipulated time so that normal supply can be restored at the earliest.

About Bhadaini Pump House

Established in 1907, the Bhadaini Pump House is one of the oldest and most vital water supply facilities in Varanasi. Drawing water directly from the Ganga River, it plays a crucial role in supplying potable water to large sections of the city. Regular upgrades and maintenance are essential to ensure uninterrupted and safe water distribution.

Authorities have appealed to residents for cooperation during the temporary inconvenience, emphasizing that the upgrade work will strengthen the city’s water supply system in the long run.
