Kashi Vishwanath Devotees Keep 27-Year Jalabhishek Tradition Alive

VARANASI: A devotional practice that began at the turn of the millennium returned to the lanes of central Kashi on Shravan Purnima, as members of the Shri Baba Kashi Vishwanath Bhakt Seva Samiti carried water to the Kashi Vishwanath temple for their annual jalabhishek. The group assembled at Sindhi Dharamshala on Luxa Road before walking through Godowlia, Bansphatak and the Gyanvapi approach to the shrine. Organisers said this was the twenty-seventh year in which the committee had offered water to the deity as a collective.

The walk was modest compared with the large kanwariya service camp for which the organisation was once known, but that was precisely why participants considered it important. The committee first opened a service camp for kanwariyas in the Sawan season of 2000 and continued it without interruption until 2019. The camp could not be held during the Covid disruption in 2020. Members say it has not resumed because a suitable site has not been available, yet they chose not to let the annual worship disappear with the camp.

General secretary Lakshminarayan Jaiswal and Manoj Jaiswal, national president of the Jaiswal Club, led the procession, according to the local report on which this article is based. By setting out from Luxa rather than gathering only at the temple gate, the group retraced a familiar city route. It is a corridor where faith, commerce and traffic meet every day, and where even a small procession requires participants to move with care through crowds and security checks.

For long-time volunteers, the jalabhishek also works as a yearly roll call. Service camps depend on space, permissions, money and a large roster of workers; a short pilgrimage can survive with fewer resources. That difference has allowed the committee to retain a visible link with the work it began twenty-six years ago. Members described the offering as continuity rather than spectacle, keeping the focus on worship after the practical loss of the camp.

The occasion arrived at the close of the Shravan calendar, when Kashi's temples and neighbourhood shrines see a final round of group worship before the festive season changes pace. The committee has not announced a new location or date for restarting its kanwariya camp. For now, its members say the annual water offering remains the part of the old programme they can reliably carry forward.
