Traffic Restrictions Imposed in Varanasi Ahead of New Year Rush

Varanasi is witnessing a massive influx of tourists ahead of New Year celebrations, prompting the city administration to enforce strict traffic regulations to ensure smooth movement and public safety. The Varanasi Traffic Police have announced a comprehensive traffic diversion plan, which will remain in effect from December 29, 2025, to January 5, 2026.
According to ADCP (Traffic) Anshuman Mishra, vehicular movement toward the Kashi Vishwanath Temple and surrounding areas has been strictly restricted. Even during moderate crowd conditions, four-wheelers will not be permitted in sensitive zones such as Jagatganj, Lahurabir, Maidagin, Visheshwarganj, and Golgadda.
Key Traffic Diversions Announced
Vehicles moving from Jagatganj to Lahurabir will be diverted via Chaukaghat or Teliabag.
Traffic coming from Visheshwarganj will not be allowed to proceed towards Golgadda.
Entry towards Assi Ghat has been restricted; vehicles from Bank of Baroda Tiraha will be diverted towards Ravidas Gate, while those coming from Nagwa Chauraha will be redirected towards the BHU Trauma Centre.
Authorities have urged residents and visitors to strictly follow traffic advisories and cooperate with police personnel deployed across the city.
AI-Based Crowd Management Initiative
In a major step towards smart urban management, Municipal Commissioner Himanshu Nagpal announced the development of an AI-powered pedestrian navigation system under the Sustainable Cities Challenge. The technology aims to guide tourists through Varanasi’s narrow lanes and help prevent overcrowding during peak pilgrimage days.
Officials believe this initiative will significantly enhance crowd control, improve safety, and offer a smoother experience to pilgrims and tourists alike during the festive season.
